St. Mary’s College of Maryland has hired Nikolaus Meyer as head coach for its men’s and women’s rowing programs, marking him as the fourth leader in the 10-year varsity history of the teams.

Meyer, a North Potomac resident and University of Maryland graduate with a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering and a minor in general business, assumed the role immediately. He enters his fifth season with the Seahawks after serving as assistant coach for three years and interim head coach during the 2023-24 campaign.

“I am honored by the faith the athletics department has in me to take on this position,” Meyer said. “This will be my first true head coaching position and I’m so excited by the possibilities that this opens up. The program has seen great success during the last four years that I’ve served as the assistant coach / interim head coach and I’m confident we’ll soar to even greater heights as I step into the head coach role!”

The women’s rowing team has claimed three consecutive Mid-Atlantic Rowing Conference championships during Meyer’s involvement, starting with the program’s first title in 2022 under his assistant coaching. That year also brought the Seahawks’ initial appearance at the NCAA Division III Women’s Rowing Championships. In 2023-24, as interim head coach, Meyer guided the women to a repeat MARC title and another NCAA berth, earning MARC Women’s Coach of the Year and Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association Mid-Atlantic Region Coach of the Year honors.

The most recent season saw the coaching staff, including Meyer as assistant, named CRCA Mid-Atlantic Region Co-Staff of the Year for the second straight year. The women secured a third MARC championship and advanced to the grand finals at the NCAA Championships for the first time.

Meyer holds US Rowing Level 2 coaching certification. Before joining St. Mary’s College, he worked as assistant coach for Blair Crew Inc. and Elizabeth Seton High School from 2018 to 2021.

Rowing at the college launched as a varsity sport for both men and women around 2015, building on earlier club-level participation. The Mid-Atlantic Rowing Conference includes schools from Maryland, Virginia, and Pennsylvania, with championships typically held in spring on venues like Lake Mercer in Fairfax County, Virginia, or Cooper River in New Jersey for larger regattas.

NCAA Division III rowing features a team-based championship with events such as the varsity eight, second varsity eight, and varsity four. Selection criteria consider regional performances, with the Mid-Atlantic one of several competitive areas nationwide.

Coaches like Meyer oversee training that runs year-round, emphasizing ergometer work in winter and on-water sessions from fall through spring. The St. Marys River provides flatwater conditions ideal for practice, though teams travel for head-to-head races against programs from Johns Hopkins University, Washington College in Chestertown, or Franklin & Marshall College.

The men’s team continues development alongside the women’s success, competing in the same conference and aiming for consistent postseason appearances. St. Mary’s College supports rowing through its waterfront activities center, which also hosts sailing and other water sports.

Athletic Director Crystal Gibson oversees the department, which emphasizes the scholar-athlete model common to Division III institutions.

Meyer’s promotion ensures continuity for athletes returning to the boathouse each season, with the program positioned for ongoing competitiveness in regional and national events.
