James Quade Jr. of Chaptico in St. Mary’s County claimed a $50,000 third-tier Powerball prize after matching five white balls in the December 13 drawing.
Quade, accompanied by his father, visited Maryland Lottery headquarters in Baltimore on December 16 to collect the winnings. The pair expressed satisfaction with the prize but noted they would have preferred a jackpot match. Quade plans to continue playing Powerball.

The winner intends to use most of the funds for maintenance and upkeep on his son’s go-kart, as the young racer competes along the East Coast circuit. Quade operates an office carpet installation business and purchased the ticket at St. Mary’s Gas Station, located at 23950 Colton Point Road in Clements.
Powerball drawings occur three times weekly on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays. Players select five numbers from 1 to 69 and one Powerball number from 1 to 26. The third-tier prize of $50,000 awards for matching all five white balls without the Powerball. Adding the Power Play option for an extra dollar can multiply non-jackpot prizes, though Quade’s ticket did not include this feature for a higher amount.
The December 13 drawing featured white balls 1, 28, 31, 57, and 58, with red Powerball 16. No ticket claimed the jackpot, then estimated at over $1 billion, contributing to ongoing growth.
Quade’s win adds to recent Powerball activity in Maryland. Since the last jackpot on September 6—a $1.787 billion prize split by tickets in Missouri and Texas—Maryland players have claimed multiple prizes in the $50,000 to $1 million range from tickets sold across the state, including in Clements.
The jackpot continued rolling after December 13, reaching an estimated $1.25 billion for the December 17 drawing before climbing further. Maryland Lottery officials encourage players to check tickets carefully, as third-tier wins like Quade’s require matching exact white ball combinations from the draw.
Claims for prizes over $25,000 must occur at lottery headquarters by appointment, with winners having 182 days from the drawing date. Quade followed this process promptly after discovering his match.
Powerball remains a multi-state game with sales supporting public programs in participating jurisdictions, including education and other initiatives in Maryland.
