ANNAPOLIS, Md., Maryland State Police arrested a 29-year-old Annapolis woman on Dec. 31, 2025, following an investigation into a road rage incident on U.S. Route 50 in early December where a suspect allegedly brandished a crowbar and a firearm.

Kaila Crews, of Annapolis, faces charges of first-degree assault, second-degree assault, and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony crime. She was transported to the Jennifer Road Detention Center after her arrest.

The incident occurred Dec. 18, 2025, when troopers from the Maryland State Police Annapolis Barrack responded to westbound U.S. Route 50 near Interstate 97 for reports of a road rage encounter. The victim reported that the suspect displayed a crowbar and then a firearm during the altercation. The victim sustained no injuries.

Investigators assigned to the Maryland State Police Highway Gun Crime Initiative took over the case and identified Crews as the suspect. On Dec. 31, troopers arrested her near her residence. During the arrest, police executed a search warrant on her vehicle and recovered a loaded firearm from a backpack on the front passenger seat.

The Maryland State Police emphasized their commitment to public safety on highways through proactive enforcement against gun violence. The arrest highlights ongoing efforts by state police to address firearm-related incidents on major roadways in Maryland, including those affecting commuters in Anne Arundel County and surrounding areas. U.S. Route 50 serves as a critical corridor connecting Annapolis to the broader Baltimore-Washington region and carries significant traffic from Southern Maryland counties such as Calvert, Charles, and St. Mary’s, where many residents commute daily for work or services.

The Highway Gun Crime Initiative focuses on identifying and apprehending individuals involved in threats or assaults with firearms on state highways. Such incidents can escalate quickly and endanger drivers, passengers, and first responders. The recovery of the loaded firearm in this case underscores the initiative’s role in removing potential threats from roadways.

No additional details on the victim’s identity or the specific circumstances leading to the alleged road rage were released by authorities. The case remains under investigation, and charges are pending further review by the Anne Arundel County State’s Attorney’s Office.

This incident follows a pattern of reported road rage encounters on major Maryland highways, prompting continued emphasis on de-escalation and safe driving practices. The Maryland State Police encourage motorists to avoid confrontations, maintain distance, and report dangerous behavior to law enforcement immediately.
