The St. Mary’s College of Maryland open sailing team concluded the fall segment of its 2025-26 season with a ninth-place finish at the 41st Annual Rose Bowl Regatta on January 4, 2026.
Hosted by the University of Southern California and the U.S. Sailing Center, the two-day event included 24 collegiate teams. Brown University won the regatta with a score of 42, followed by Boston College at 47 and Tulane University at 80. The Seahawks accumulated 109 points overall.

After the first day of racing on Saturday, January 3, St. Mary’s held sixth place with 66 points, four points behind fifth-place Roger Williams University and three points ahead of seventh-place Santa Barbara City College.
In Division A, junior skipper Nathan Jensen of Sudbury, Massachusetts (Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) and senior captain Brooke Bertrand of Costa Mesa, California (Orange Coast College) secured third place for the day with 15 points. They won Race 1A and finished fourth in the subsequent two races, trailing first-place Brown University by five points.
Division B saw junior skipper Lina Carper of Carlsbad, California (Coronado) paired with first-year crew members Cash Espinoza of Newport Harbor and Lauren Choi. Espinoza crewed Races 1B and 2B, while Choi crewed the next two. The group posted 51 points, placing 14th after Saturday.
On Sunday, January 4, Jensen and Bertrand finished fourth in Division A with 33 points total, one point behind third-place Tulane. They placed eighth and 10th in the final two races of the regatta.
Carper and Choi combined for Races 5B and 6B, improving one position to 13th in Division B with 76 points overall.
The Rose Bowl Regatta marks the final competition of the fall portion of the Seahawks’ schedule. The team is scheduled to resume action in the spring with the Quad Team Race at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, on February 21-22, 2026, starting at 10 a.m.
St. Mary’s College of Maryland, located in St. Mary’s City, maintains a nationally competitive sailing program recognized for its consistent performance in intercollegiate regattas. The open team competes in both fleet and team-race formats against programs from across the country. Results from the Rose Bowl reflect the team’s ability to compete at a high level against larger institutions, with strong showings in Division A contributing to the overall placement.
