Calvert County, Md. — Constellation, operator of the Calvert Cliffs Clean Energy Center, received the Beacon of Light Recognition from the Calvert County Chamber of Commerce on December 5, 2025, for the facility’s employees’ extensive philanthropy and community involvement over five decades.

The award highlights 50 years of sustained contributions by Calvert Cliffs employees to Southern Maryland, emphasizing service, partnership and dedication to improving the region. Jonathan Evans, a member of the Chesapeake Beach Town Council, submitted a letter of support stating, “For 50 years now, Calvert Cliffs has not only powered Maryland with clean, reliable energy, it has powered the very heart of Southern Maryland through unwavering community commitment, service and partnership.”

He added, “Since its inception in 1975, generations of Calvert Cliffs employees have been committed to the mission to make Calvert County a better place to work, play and raise a family. Their dedication to service is not just a corporate initiative; it is a priority that the employees have embraced as their own.”

Key 2025 initiatives demonstrated the scope of this involvement. During National Volunteer Month, more than 70 Constellation employees and friends collaborated with Sleep in Heavenly Peace to build 100 beds for local children, ensuring safe sleeping arrangements. The on-site event marked the plant’s 50th anniversary and concluded with a citation from Congressman Steny Hoyer’s office acknowledging Constellation’s long-term community impact.

Constellation also supported education through the establishment of the region’s first STEM Center at Southern Middle School, in partnership with the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation. The project converted a standard classroom into an interactive space designed for hands-on learning and innovation in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

A $90,000 scholarship program was introduced in collaboration with the University System of Maryland at Southern Maryland, targeting students pursuing degrees in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering. One scholarship recipient described the award as more than financial assistance, stating, “This scholarship isn’t just financial support – it’s encouragement to keep pushing toward my dreams.”

Additional efforts included a partnership with Community Harvest Network during End Hunger Month, where employees packaged nearly 1,700 holiday meals for families in need. Through Constellation’s CLEAN Awards program, more than $100,000 was directed to organizations in Calvert County, including the Chesapeake Bay Trust, Calvert Nature Society and Patuxent Tidewater Land Trust.

The 50th anniversary celebrations extended to Earth Day activities focused on giving back, reinforcing the connection between the facility’s operational milestone and its community service record. The Beacon of Light Recognition, presented by the Calvert County Chamber of Commerce, serves as formal acknowledgment of these ongoing contributions by employees at the Calvert Cliffs Clean Energy Center, located in Lusby, Maryland.

Calvert County continues to benefit from such partnerships between local businesses and nonprofit organizations, supporting areas including education, hunger relief, environmental conservation and family services in Southern Maryland.
