The structure belongs to Gordon Dobbins. Estimated damage totals $75,000 to the building and $10,000 to contents. The fire was confined to the garage, its area of origin. A family dog alerted an occupant to the blaze, aiding early discovery. Smoke alarm, fire alarm and sprinkler status were listed as not applicable in the notice of investigation.

The preliminary cause was determined to be accidental, stemming from an electrical malfunction in the garage. No arrests were made.

Charles County fire officials released details through a notice of investigation, noting the rapid response limited spread beyond the point of origin. The La Plata Volunteer Fire Department provided a photograph of the scene documenting the response and damage.

The displacement of three residents highlights the immediate effects of even contained structure fires on local families. Temporary housing options in Charles County typically include assistance from the American Red Cross Southern Maryland Chapter, which coordinates support for fire-displaced individuals in the region.

Fire officials emphasized the importance of electrical maintenance in garages, where appliances, tools, vehicles and charging equipment can contribute to hazards if wiring or devices malfunction. The quick containment in this incident prevented wider structural involvement and reduced potential loss.

The investigation concluded with an accidental classification, closing the matter without further enforcement action. Residents in Southern Maryland communities such as La Plata, Waldorf and Indian Head are encouraged to schedule regular inspections of electrical systems, particularly in attached garages, to mitigate similar risks.
