LA PLATA, Md. — Charles County Commissioners on Jan. 6, 2026, approved a $1,500 sponsorship for the 2026 Martin Luther King Jr. Prayer Breakfast, a letter requesting financial and construction management services from the Maryland Stadium Authority for Regency Furniture Stadium improvements, and a $30,100 budget amendment for forestry purposes during a regular meeting that also included discussions on bonuses for sworn sheriff’s officers, updates on resiliency and sustainability goals, and adoption of a bill on commissioner compensation.
The approvals came amid routine business, with the board postponing a vote on the sheriff bonuses due to advertising requirements for budgetary items. Commissioners indicated they would revisit the matter later. The proposed $1,000 bonuses would extend to sworn Charles County Sheriff’s Office bargaining unit members a benefit previously offered to other county employees but excluded due to collective bargaining agreement language.
Staff provided an update on progress toward the commissioners’ resiliency and sustainability objectives. In water resources, the county is in the design phase for the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission Waldorf Water System Interconnection, which would supply 5 million gallons per day of potable water. A long-range Potomac River Water Supply Treatment Facility project remains in feasibility and planning stages. On climate change, reviews continue for energy retrofits at county buildings to cut consumption and emissions, alongside the American Rescue Plan Act-funded Residential Drainage Improvement Program to repair and enhance drainage infrastructure, with completion set by Dec. 31, 2026.
Land preservation efforts advance the goal of protecting 50% of the county’s total land area as open space. As of 2025, Charles County has secured 107,125 acres. Earlier, in 2023, the county had preserved 105,885 acres, or 36% of its land area. The county received $3.2 million in Rural Legacy Program funding in August 2025 to acquire easements on 665 acres in the Nanjemoy-Mattawoman Forest Rural Legacy Area, established in 2021 to safeguard forests, wetlands and streams in the Potomac River watershed. Additional easements approved in December 2025 included 287 acres in the Zekiah Rural Legacy Area. These steps build on prior initiatives, such as the Maryland Agricultural Land Preservation Foundation easements that protected 824 acres statewide in 2022, including Charles County farms.
Environmental initiatives include bolstered community cleanup programs. In 2025, 47 communities participated in combined Community Cleanup and Potomac River Watershed Cleanup events. Such efforts align with broader conservation, as seen in student-led projects like Diggs Elementary School’s first-place win in a 2025 community cleanup challenge through Maryland Elementary School Activities. County partnerships, like the 2023 Earth Day Litter Blitz with the State Highway Administration, encouraged resident involvement in cleanups.
Associate County Attorney Terrah Dews briefed the board on Proposed Bill 2026-01, enacting recommendations from the Charles County Compensation Commission on commissioner pay. The board unanimously adopted the bill and set a public hearing for Feb. 24, 2026, at 6 p.m., while approving a related resolution.
Proclamations recognized National Mentoring Month, National Pan-Hellenic Council Recognition Month, National School Choice Week, Catholic Schools Week and Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service and Beyond.
The board appointed Michelle Gillam-Lyons to the Nuisance Abatement Hearing Board.
Approval items included a $30,100 budget amendment increase to cover a Chesapeake Bay Trust invoice for a Forest Conservation Fee-In-Lieu project supporting forestry.
The $1,500 sponsorship, at the Salome Howard level, funds the Charles County NAACP Branch’s 31st Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Prayer Breakfast on Jan. 19, 2026, at North Point High School in Waldorf. The event, from 9 a.m. to noon, features sponsorship packages ranging from $250 George Foster (one ticket) to $2,500 Dupree Monk (eight tickets, full-page ad). The Salome Howard level includes 10 participants, a quarter-page color ad in the program journal, listing in the patrons section and acknowledgment on branch social media. The memo from Commissioner Specialist Christina Ledman, dated Dec. 4, 2025, justified the purchase under the Community Support Policy for sponsoring a county community event, with funds from the Community Support budget and approval by Commissioner President Reuben B. Collins II.
Commissioners approved a letter to Maryland Stadium Authority Executive Director Michael J. Frenz requesting services under Chapter 61 (HB 897) of the 2022 Maryland Acts for Regency Furniture Stadium in Waldorf. The stadium, owned by the county and leased to the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball, opened in 2008 and requires $38 million in improvements to meet league and Major League Baseball partner standards, including baseball field upgrades, a new clubhouse and training facilities. Since 2023, the authority has collaborated on preliminary design analysis favoring these enhancements. The request seeks financing and construction management through the Sports Entertainment Facilities Program.
The meeting reflects ongoing county priorities in public safety, environmental stewardship and community engagement in Charles County, population about 170,000, amid regional growth in Southern Maryland.
