LEONARDTOWN, Md. — The St. Mary’s County Arts Council relaunched its weekly “Welcome Wednesdays” art workshops with a successful first session on January 7, 2026, at the organization’s Gallery & Gift Shop in downtown Leonardtown.
The event marked the return of a pre-COVID program that had been paused during the pandemic. Organizers described the revival as “even better,” highlighting strong attendance from local artists who worked on personal projects, connected with new people, met staff members, and explored the gallery space. Participants engaged in various creative activities, including drawing, painting, needle felting, knitting, and crocheting, creating what the council called an “amazing display of ‘art in action.'”

The workshops are now offered every Wednesday, providing a casual environment for community members to bring projects in progress and create alongside others. Newcomers without an ongoing project can participate using small art kits available for $5 each or free activity options provided on site. Attendees are encouraged to bring favorite beverages and snacks, with several coffee spots located within easy walking distance. Pets are permitted, adding to the relaxed, inclusive atmosphere.
Free parking is available on Washington Street behind the building and in other designated public lots nearby. An RSVP is appreciated but not required, and questions can be directed to gallery@smcart.org. The gallery is located at 22660 Washington St., Leonardtown, MD 20650, and can be reached by phone at (240) 309-4061.
This initiative supports the council’s mission to foster community through the arts in St. Mary’s County, part of the broader Leonardtown Arts & Entertainment District, the only designated district of its kind in Southern Maryland. The weekly format offers consistent opportunities for social interaction and creative work, building on the positive turnout from the January 7 session.
The St. Mary’s County Arts Council operates the Gallery & Gift Shop to promote and sell work from artists in St. Mary’s, Calvert, and Charles counties. The space hosts exhibitions and serves as a hub for community engagement. Ongoing programs include youth art shows, calls for entries for themed exhibits, and collaborations such as a recent wine label design contest with the Port of Leonardtown Winery.
The relaunch aligns with the council’s efforts to expand arts access following pandemic disruptions. Similar community-focused events, like Second Friday Socials and annual Art Walks, contribute to Leonardtown’s cultural scene. The workshops emphasize accessibility, with low-cost or no-cost entry points to encourage broad participation.
