The collision happened around 12:30 a.m. on December 12, 2025. A deputy observed a Nissan sedan traveling southbound in the 500 block of Route 4 and activated emergency lights near Prince Frederick Boulevard and Calvert Hills Road to initiate a traffic stop. The Nissan driver did not stop and continued southbound for approximately one mile without the deputy engaging in an active pursuit. The Nissan then entered the intersection of Stoakley Road and Route 4, colliding with a northbound Honda sedan driven by Gatewood.

The impact caused a secondary collision with a Kia SUV. Gatewood was transported to CalvertHealth Medical Center in Prince Frederick, where she was pronounced dead. The Kia driver and passenger sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to local hospitals. The Nissan driver was taken into custody at the scene and transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The decedent was identified as Servon Gatewood of Lusby. The involved deputy was Ryan Campbell, who has four years of service with the Calvert County Sheriffs Office and is assigned to the patrol division. The driver of the Nissan was identified as Savon Samuel, 32, of Pikesville, Maryland, who was arrested by Maryland State Police. Questions regarding the arrest were directed to Maryland State Police by the Office of the Attorney General.

The released body-worn camera footage, hosted on YouTube, captures the immediate response to the crash. It begins with officers commanding a suspect to show hands and stop reaching, leading to the suspects detention. Officers note the suspect is slippery and check for items he might be reaching for. They then assess the scene, identifying three disabled vehicles: a Nissan Maxima, a Kia SV, and a blue Honda Civic. Radio communications confirm no traffic in the intersection and request additional units, later canceled. Officers discover a female driver trapped in one vehicle with no pulse. The footage includes audio of commands, radio dispatches, and observations of casualties, emphasizing coordination for emergency medical services arrival. The video contains graphic content warnings and depicts the chaotic assessment of injuries and vehicle damage.

The Independent Investigations Division assumed jurisdiction immediately after the incident, as required for all police-involved fatalities in Maryland. The Maryland State Police Crash Team assisted with collision reconstruction, including vehicle examinations, speed analysis, braking patterns, and impact dynamics. Evidence collection also involved witness statements. The deputy was placed on routine paid administrative leave pending the investigation, in line with department policy and state law. The divisions final report is expected within 90 days of completing the probe. State law mandates the release of names of the deceased and involved officers within two business days, with possible extensions. Body-worn and dashboard camera footage is typically released within 20 business days, subject to exceptions for witness interviews, technical redactions, or family reviews.

The Independent Investigations Division continues to examine the circumstances surrounding the collision. Anyone with information, including cellphone or dash-camera video, is asked to contact the division at 410-576-7070 or by email at IID@oag.state.md.us.
