ST. MARY’S CITY, Md. – Historic St. Mary’s City (HSMC), the site of Maryland’s first capital and a key center for archaeological research and public history, has named David S. O’Donnell as its new Executive Director. O’Donnell will begin the role in early 2026.

O’Donnell succeeds a period of interim leadership at the institution, which is operated as a state-owned historic site and living history museum. He brings more than 20 years of experience leading nonprofit and public-facing organizations. His career includes securing over $100 million in funding from philanthropic, corporate, and government sources while guiding entities through growth, transitions, and renewals.

Most recently, O’Donnell served as Director of Development for the Association of Schools and Colleges of Optometry, directing a national fundraising effort for healthcare education institutions. Prior positions include senior leadership at Baltimore Public Markets Corporation and Lexington Market, Citizens for Tax Justice, and various national policy and education groups. His efforts have emphasized mission alignment, impact measurement, sustainability, public trust, and stakeholder relations.

RADM (Ret.) Tim Heely, chairman of the Historic St. Mary’s City Commission, highlighted the timing of the appointment. “Historic St. Mary’s City stands at a pivotal moment,” Heely said. “David brings the strategic vision, leadership experience, and collaborative approach needed to guide this institution forward. His background in complex organizations, capital projects, and public mission-driven work makes him exceptionally well-suited to lead HSMC into its next chapter, including preparations for Maryland’s 400th anniversary.”

Travis Parno, PhD, Director of Research and Collections and Acting Executive Director, addressed the transition. “Historic St. Mary’s City is a place where rigorous scholarship, public history, and living landscapes come together,” Parno said. “David understands the responsibility that comes with stewarding a site of this significance. I am confident he will value the integrity of the research, the expertise of the staff, and the trust our audiences place in us.”

O’Donnell will manage all HSMC operations, encompassing archaeological research, education programs, museum interpretation, fundraising, marketing, and collaborations with the State of Maryland and St. Mary’s College of Maryland. The appointment aligns with HSMC’s ongoing efforts to serve as a regional tourism attraction, educational resource, and hub for exploring Maryland’s diverse historical narratives.

“I am honored to join Historic St. Mary’s City,” O’Donnell said. “This is a place of extraordinary historical importance with a powerful opportunity to connect the past to the present in meaningful ways. I look forward to working alongside the dedicated staff, commission, foundation, and community partners to strengthen HSMC’s impact for generations to come.”

The announcement reflects HSMC’s commitment to continuity in its core functions—research, education, and visitor experiences—while positioning the site for future development. Located in St. Mary’s County, HSMC preserves the original 17th-century settlement established in 1634, offering insights into colonial Maryland, Indigenous interactions, African American history, and early religious tolerance. The site supports ongoing excavations and interpretive programs that draw visitors and scholars.

No additional details on the selection process or specific start date beyond early 2026 were provided in the announcement. The institution operates under the Historic St. Mary’s City Commission, a state board responsible for its governance and preservation.
