Firefighters from Mechanicsville Volunteer Fire Department and mutual aid companies battled a basement fire that extended through a one-story single-family home in Mechanicsville on Jan. 20, 2026, resulting in significant damage but no injuries.

The incident occurred at approximately 11:32 a.m. in the 39000 block of Cooney Neck Road in St. Mary’s County. Multiple 911 callers reported a garage fire with flames extending into the attached home. Chief 2A Trowbridge arrived on scene and confirmed smoke showing from the first floor of the residence, which featured a basement. An active fire was present in the basement with extension into the main living area. The homeowner informed arriving crews that all occupants and pets had safely evacuated.

Engine Tanker 24 initiated the primary attack by deploying a hoseline into the basement from Side C (rear). A secondary handline was advanced through the front door on Side A to combat fire on the first floor. Crews faced involvement in the basement, first floor, garage, and attic. Multiple floor collapses occurred on the first floor, particularly near the garage area, forcing crews to exercise caution and withdraw from certain sections at times.

A Working Incident Task Force was requested, dispatching additional resources including Rescue Engine 92 and Safety 9 from Bay District Volunteer Fire Department’s California station. Rescue Engine 92 served as the Rapid Intervention Team (RIT) to stand ready for potential firefighter rescues during interior operations. Safety Officer 9 monitored hazards and ensured protocol adherence. After suppression, the RIT assisted with overhaul.

Hollywood Volunteer Fire Department units, including Truck 7 and Engine 73, responded. Truck 7 deployed ground ladders, conducted searches, ventilated, and supported fire attack before opening the roof. Engine 73 established a fill site for tankers in the non-hydrant area. Engine Tanker 74 provided extra tanker support with a crew of four for attack and overhaul.

Water supply was established via tanker shuttles. SMECO secured utilities, and the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office managed traffic control, closing portions of Cooney Neck Road, New Market Turner Road, and All Faith Church Road.

The fire was declared under control at approximately 12:11 p.m. Overhaul to extinguish hot spots continued, with all units cleared by around 14:35 hours after roughly three hours of operations. No injuries were reported to civilians or firefighters. The cause remains under investigation.

The response involved units from Mechanicsville (Company 2), Hollywood, Leonardtown, Seventh District, Bay District, Hughesville, Dentsville, Bel Alton, and Prince Frederick fire departments.

This incident highlights ongoing fire risks in residential areas of Southern Maryland, where rural locations often require tanker operations due to limited hydrant access.
