DUNKIRK, Md. — Two Washington, D.C. men have been convicted and sentenced in Calvert County Circuit Court for their roles in an armed robbery at a Dunkirk convenience store in May 2025.
Samuel Giles, 55, of Washington, D.C., pleaded guilty to robbery on January 30, 2026, and was sentenced to five years of incarceration in the Maryland Division of Corrections. His co-defendant, Darnell Marquis Atchison, also of Washington, D.C., previously entered a guilty plea to the same charge and received a sentence of five years of active incarceration.
The convictions stem from an incident on May 4, 2025, at the Town Center Market in Dunkirk. Two masked individuals entered the store, confronted the clerk, and demanded property. The suspects stole multiple boxes of cigarettes and rolls of quarters before fleeing the scene. No injuries were reported during the robbery.
Calvert County Sheriff’s Office detectives identified Giles and Atchison as the perpetrators through investigative work. Both men were arrested in Washington, D.C., following the identification.
The case was prosecuted by Senior Assistant State’s Attorney Christopher J. Monte in Calvert County Circuit Court. The guilty pleas and sentences conclude the judicial process for the robbery, which targeted a retail business in northern Calvert County along the busy Route 4 corridor serving local residents and commuters traveling between Southern Maryland and the Washington metropolitan area.
This outcome provides closure for the store employees and owners impacted by the May 2025 incident while reinforcing accountability in retail theft cases that can disrupt small businesses in the region.
