The Independent Investigations Division (IID) of the Maryland Office of the Attorney General has named 36-year-old Demarcus Irish of Clinton as the man fatally shot by Charles County Sheriff’s Office officers during an attempted arrest warrant service in White Plains on February 11, 2026.
The involved officers are Sergeant Andrew Coulby, a 12-year veteran, and Police Officer First Class Brennan Kunz, a 15-year veteran, both assigned to the Domestic Violence Unit. The IID, which handles all police-involved fatalities in Maryland, continues its investigation into the circumstances.
The incident unfolded around 2:30 p.m. in the 10000 block of Cobbler Place, near Newport Circle, as officers attempted to serve an arrest warrant linked to escalating domestic-related incidents, including a protective order. Preliminary details indicate Irish produced a machete, raised it over his head while facing the officers, prompting two officers to fire their service weapons. Officers provided immediate emergency medical aid, including CPR, until EMS arrived, but Irish was pronounced dead at the scene. A machete was recovered nearby. No officers were injured.
Officers wore body-worn cameras that recorded the event. The IID typically releases such footage within 20 business days, though extensions may occur for witness interviews, identity protections, technical issues, or family viewing prior to public release.
The IID seeks public assistance, particularly from anyone with cell phone video, private surveillance footage, or other information. Contact the division at (410) 576-7070 or IID@oag.maryland.gov.
This marks another police-involved fatality in Southern Maryland, where domestic violence-related calls and warrant services can escalate rapidly.
The case remains under active IID review, with findings to inform potential further actions.
