WALDORF, MD – Community support surged for the Humane Society of Charles County, enabling the nonprofit to exceed its initial $125,000 target and avert immediate financial collapse.
HSCC Director April Hodges announced the milestone in a message released approximately one week after the organization’s initial difficult disclosure about facing closure without rapid funding. The shelter relies entirely on private donations, receiving no support from Charles County, the state of Maryland, or the Humane Society of the United States.
Hodges expressed deep appreciation for the response. “Thanks to the incredible generosity of hundreds of supporters across Southern Maryland and beyond, we have surpassed our initial $125,000 fundraising goal,” she stated. “Your donations, shares, messages of encouragement and offers to volunteer have reminded us just how deeply this shelter matters to our community.”
Beyond monetary contributions, individuals offered professional skills in marketing, media outreach, communications, grant writing, photography, grooming, event planning, and additional areas. This volunteer expertise will aid ongoing operations.
“Because of you, HSCC can continue providing safety, care and second chances to the animals who depend on us,” Hodges said.
The shelter’s financial challenges stem from depleted resources amid rising operational costs, with no public funding streams to offset them. The $125,000 goal aimed to stabilize operations through 2026, covering essentials like food, medical care, and shelter for homeless, injured, and neglected animals.
While the outpouring stabilized short-term needs, Hodges emphasized the necessity for sustained support. “While this outpouring of support has helped stabilize us in the short term, our work is far from over,” she noted. “To ensure the long-term future of the shelter, we need reliable monthly donations that allow us to provide food, medical care and shelter to animals year-round.”
She encouraged recurring contributions, even small amounts, to build financial predictability. “If you are able, please consider becoming a monthly supporter. Even a small recurring donation helps create the stability we need to continue this lifesaving work.”
HSCC operates as a no-kill facility, focusing on adoption, fostering, community partnerships, and humane education to provide second chances for thousands of animals over its history. The organization continues to house and care for dogs, cats, and other pets in need.
Donations can be made one-time or monthly via the shelter’s website at https://humanesocietycc.org/donate.
The rapid community response demonstrates strong local attachment to animal welfare in Southern Maryland, particularly in Charles County where HSCC serves as the primary no-kill option. Regional media coverage amplified the initial plea, drawing attention from residents and supporters beyond the immediate area.
Hodges closed with gratitude. “From the bottom of our hearts — thank you for standing with us during this critical moment.”
The shelter’s future now hinges on maintaining momentum through consistent giving to sustain daily care and prevent recurrence of such crises.
