Calvert County families have a direct opportunity to shape a modern, eco-friendly playground at Cove Point Park in Lusby as the Department of Parks & Recreation hosts a community Design Day on March 18, 2026, in partnership with national nonprofit KABOOM!.
The event runs from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at Chesapeake Hills Golf Course, 11352 H.G. Trueman Road in Lusby, with food provided to encourage broad participation. The initiative targets replacement of the existing playground at the rear of Cove Point Park, 750 Cove Point Road, which has reached the end of its useful life since installation in 2007. The new play space will feature updated equipment, environmentally friendly materials, and improved accessibility to serve families visiting the park’s athletic fields, pool complex, and other amenities.

Community input drives the process. Residents are urged to complete the KABOOM! Design Vision Survey ahead of the event to share ideas, influence the presentation, and allow input from those unable to attend in person. The survey closes at the end of Design Day on March 18.
The March 18 gathering starts with children at 5:30 p.m. drawing their ideal playground features. From 6:30 p.m., adults can contribute ideas, assume leadership roles, and join committees supporting the hands-on build scheduled for May 19–21, 2026. Following the event, KABOOM! will collaborate with a playground vendor and Calvert County Parks & Recreation to finalize the design incorporating gathered feedback.
Volunteering opportunities remain open through the department’s registration site, and children planning to attend should register in advance. The project aligns with the recently completed Cove Point Park Master Plan, which positions the playground as a key perimeter anchor near sports fields for multi-age family use.
Financial backing comes from Constellation Energy as the primary partner, joined by The Wills Group, Scheibel Construction, CalvertHealth, Chick-fil-A First Colony, and the Mark Frisco Team. Earlier phases included public surveys in late 2025 on two concept designs from Playground Specialists, Inc., advancing the project toward this community-driven stage.
The effort reflects Calvert County’s commitment to enhancing recreational spaces in Southern Maryland, particularly in Lusby, where Cove Point Park draws thousands annually for its mix of play, sports, and aquatic facilities. The rebuild addresses aging infrastructure while prioritizing sustainability and inclusivity.
