A stabbing incident at Great Mills High School in Leonardtown left one student injured and prompted a swift response from law enforcement and emergency services on Tuesday, March 10, 2026.

Two students became involved in an altercation inside a boys’ bathroom at the school, located in St. Mary’s County. The confrontation escalated when one student stabbed the other in the lower chest area, just beneath the pectoral muscle, using a knife. The injured student exited the bathroom, showing visible signs of injury, and received assistance from several peers who escorted him to the nurse’s office. There, school staff confirmed the stab wound, and the victim identified the suspect and described the weapon used.

School administrators immediately placed Great Mills High School on a secure hold to ensure safety during the initial investigation. Deputies from the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office arrived on scene, located the suspect, took him into custody, and recovered the knife. Once authorities confirmed no ongoing threat existed, the secure hold was lifted.

Emergency medical services received the call at 12:15 p.m. First responders evaluated the victim at the school and, exercising caution due to the nature of the injury, requested airlift transport. A medevac helicopter landed on the school’s baseball field at 12:53 p.m., and the student’s guardian was present throughout the process. The victim was transported to the Children’s Hospital for additional medical treatment; reports indicate the injuries appear non-life-threatening.

The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office leads the ongoing investigation, with support from Great Mills High School administration, along with the school’s safety and security team. Sheriff’s Office officials provided real-time alerts and updates via their social media channels during the response, with links available on their media page.

Principal Dothard sent a letter to families of Great Mills High School students detailing the incident and outlining support resources available for students the following day. These measures aim to address any emotional or psychological needs arising from the event.

This incident draws attention to school safety protocols in St. Mary’s County Public Schools, where rapid containment and coordination between educators and law enforcement helped resolve the situation without broader risk to the campus community.

The investigation continues, and no further details on charges, student identities, or potential motives have been released, as both individuals are juveniles.
