The Yellow Jackets seized control early, scoring the game’s first three goals in the opening quarter. Sophomore attackman Owen Wynot responded for St. Mary’s with a goal at 2:30 remaining in the period, but Randolph-Macon’s Grant Sobel answered as time expired to make it 4-1 after one.
In the second quarter, the Seahawks scored first, but Randolph-Macon countered with another three-goal surge to build a 7-2 lead with 3:51 left in the half. St. Mary’s fought back with two quick tallies in a 23-second window to trim the deficit to 7-4 with 43 seconds on the clock. The teams exchanged goals in the closing half-minute, capped by McKay’s strike with five seconds remaining, sending the visitors into halftime ahead 8-5.
Randolph-Macon pushed its advantage to 11-6 with a 3-1 run to open the second half, leading by five with 13:26 to play. The Seahawks refused to fold, as attackmen Declan Horton, Quinn McLaughlin, and Brady Manankil each scored to close within 11-9, but time expired before they could complete the comeback.
Randolph-Macon held a slight 36-35 edge in shots and a plus-three turnover margin (19-22). St. Mary’s won the ground ball battle 35-31, paced by senior midfielder Matteo Ciccarello’s nine pickups. Ciccarello also went 14-for-22 on faceoffs, providing key possession opportunities.
McKay’s three goals and two helpers paced the offense, with Horton and Manankil each adding two goals. Senior defenseman Joe Szymanski anchored the back line with seven ground balls and three caused turnovers. Sophomore goalie Ty Spencer turned aside seven shots in net.
For Randolph-Macon, Andrew Bergesen led all scorers with four goals and added seven ground balls, while goalie Jack Isaacs made nine saves.
The loss snapped a potential momentum builder for the Seahawks ahead of their next contest. St. Mary’s returns to action at home against SUNY Oneonta (3-3) on Friday, March 14, 2026, at 2 p.m. at Jamie L. Roberts Stadium.
This midweek non-conference matchup highlighted the Seahawks’ resilience despite facing an opponent with a strong start to the season. St. Mary’s has shown offensive firepower through McKay and the supporting cast, but defensive consistency and reducing turnovers remain areas for improvement as the schedule intensifies.
