Leonardtown, Maryland — Cedar Lane Senior Living Community received $1.5 million in federal funding to advance Evergreen, a planned 70-unit affordable housing development for income-eligible seniors in St. Mary’s County. The award came through the Fiscal Year 2026 Transportation, Housing and Urban Development (THUD) Appropriations bill, with support from U.S. Senators Angela Alsobrooks and Chris Van Hollen.
The funding targets the development of Evergreen, which will use Low-Income Housing Tax Credits (LIHTC) to create modern apartment homes. Construction is slated to start in 2027, with the community opening in 2028. Evergreen addresses the rising need for affordable options that allow older adults to age in place while maintaining independence and dignity in Southern Maryland.

Cedar Lane Senior Living Community, a nonprofit with nearly 50 years of service in the region, operates in Leonardtown and provides affordable apartments with supportive services for seniors and adults with disabilities. The organization offers both HUD-subsidized and fair-market units in a community-focused setting.
Eric Golden, President and CEO of Cedar Lane Senior Living Community, highlighted the impact: “This award is transformational for Cedar Lane and for the seniors we serve. Evergreen will allow us to expand access to high-quality, affordable housing for older adults who deserve stability, security, and a community where they can thrive.”
Thomas Ayd, developer with Green Street Housing, noted the project’s role in filling a key housing gap: “Cedar Lane has served seniors in Southern Maryland for nearly 50 years, and Green Street Housing is proud to be their development partner in bringing Evergreen to life. Evergreen fills the critical gap between deeply subsidized Section 8 housing and market-rate homes, completing a true continuum of affordable options for St. Mary’s County seniors.”
Senator Angela Alsobrooks emphasized the priority: “I believe all our seniors deserve to retire and age safely and with dignity. That’s why Senator Van Hollen and I worked to secure $1.5 million for Cedar Lane Senior Living to develop a new affordable housing community.”
Evergreen will deliver energy-efficient apartments designed for safety and comfort, responding directly to regional demand for senior-specific affordable housing. The project builds on Cedar Lane’s established model of blending affordability with onsite services and community engagement in the heart of Leonardtown.
This federal support arrives amid ongoing efforts to expand housing choices for older residents in Southern Maryland, where access to suitable, low-cost options remains limited. Cedar Lane continues to serve as a trusted provider, offering independence and connection for its residents.
The announcement underscores bipartisan commitment to addressing housing needs for seniors through targeted federal investments in community development projects.
