DOSWELL, Va. — Kings Dominion implemented an updated chaperone policy for the 2026 season amid social media buzz about a potential “teen takeover” on opening day, March 21, 2026, prompting proactive coordination between the park and the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office.

The policy requires all guests 17 years old or younger to be accompanied by a parent, guardian, or chaperone aged 21 or older for entry and throughout their entire visit. Chaperones must present a valid government-issued photo ID with date of birth at entry. One chaperone may supervise no more than five guests ages 17 or younger. The chaperone must enter with the group and remain on premises for the duration of the visit.

Park officials clarified in a guest response that the policy does not mandate constant side-by-side supervision. Chaperones may relax in areas like the VIP lounge or enjoy other attractions while staying reachable by phone and on the premises. This adjustment addresses family concerns about flexibility during quieter daytime hours or when supervising children of different ages.

Noncompliance results in immediate removal from the park, applying to all visitors including season pass and membership holders. The park reserves the right to enforce the policy earlier based on operational needs and may subject violators to additional actions permitted by law.

The Hanover County Sheriff’s Office issued a media release March 18, 2026, addressing circulating social media posts referencing a “teen takeover” event on opening day. While encouraging responsible enjoyment of the park and community, officials stated that disorderly conduct, fighting, trespassing, or criminal behavior will face swift enforcement.

In response, the sheriff’s office is increasing law enforcement presence in and around Kings Dominion and surrounding areas, coordinating with park security and public safety partners to maintain a safe environment for families, residents, and visitors. Recent nationwide incidents involving similar “takeover” events have disrupted businesses and affected peaceful patrons, reinforcing the commitment to prevent such occurrences locally.

Anyone with information about potential disruptive activity is urged to contact the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office non-emergency line at 804-365-6140.

Kings Dominion, located in Hanover County and part of the Six Flags Entertainment Corporation, prioritizes guest and associate safety in a family-friendly setting. The chaperone update builds on prior policies, such as those from 2023 requiring supervision for guests 15 and under after 4 p.m., but expands the age limit to 17 and applies from park opening through the visit, at least initially through spring break periods like March 21 to April 5.

This development occurs as amusement parks nationwide adapt to evolving crowd dynamics and safety concerns. Southern Maryland residents frequently visit Kings Dominion, about a three-hour drive from areas like Calvert, Charles, and St. Mary’s counties, making the policy relevant for families planning trips during the upcoming season.

Park officials emphasized their goal of balancing safety with enjoyable experiences, allowing flexibility where possible while enforcing clear boundaries to deter disruptions.
