ST. MARY’S CITY, Md. — The St. Mary’s College of Maryland men’s lacrosse team dropped a tight non-conference matchup to SUNY Geneseo, 17-16, in a goal-filled contest Tuesday afternoon, March 17, 2026, at Jamie L. Roberts Stadium. The Seahawks, now 5-4 overall, battled back multiple times but could not overcome a late surge by the Knights (3-3).
Junior attackman Gavin McKay (Urbana, Md./Urbana) delivered a standout performance with a career-high seven points on five goals and two assists, while senior captain Joshua Martel (Linthicum, Md./North County) added four goals and one assist for five points. Sophomore attackman Owen Wynot (Kent Island, Md./Kent Island) chipped in three goals. The Seahawks outshot Geneseo 50-40 and controlled ground balls 40-31, led by senior Matteo Ciccarello (Crofton, Md./Arundel) with a game-high 11 ground balls and 20-for-34 faceoff wins.

The game featured constant momentum swings. St. Mary’s edged the first quarter 5-4, with five different Seahawks scoring, including Adrian Garcia pushing the lead to 5-3 before Geneseo’s Ryan Trebing cut it close. Geneseo took the second period 6-4, with Jake Perinchief and Jacob Pensabene scoring 30 seconds apart to give the Knights a 10-9 halftime edge after five lead changes.
Geneseo opened the third with a 2-1 run for a 12-10 lead, but St. Mary’s answered with four straight goals, two from McKay, to take a 14-12 advantage into the fourth. Martel extended the lead to 15-12 just 44 seconds into the final period—St. Mary’s largest margin. Geneseo responded with back-to-back goals from Pensabene and Ryan Trebing to close within one.
McKay restored a two-goal cushion at 13:35, but the Knights rattled off three unanswered, including two from Ryan Trebing, to seize a 17-16 lead with 6:38 left. St. Mary’s turned the ball over four times in the closing minutes and managed only two shots, unable to mount a final rally.
Ryan Trebing led Geneseo with five goals and two assists, while Ronnie Trebing added four goals and three assists for 14 combined points. Goalie Ben Bradshaw made 14 saves.
Ciccarello anchored the midfield with his faceoff dominance and ground ball collection. Senior defensemen Cooper Dunwoody (Sandy Spring, Md./Sherwood) and Adam Martin (Kent Island, Md./Kent Island) each caused two turnovers, with Martin grabbing two ground balls. Sophomore goalie Ty Spencer (Hanover, Md./Indian Creek) recorded nine saves and two ground balls.
The loss snapped a brief momentum build for the Seahawks, who had shown offensive firepower in recent outings. The high-scoring affair underscored both teams’ attacking prowess, with 33 total goals in a back-and-forth contest that kept fans engaged throughout.
St. Mary’s next travels to face Eastern University (1-7) on Friday, March 21, 2026, at 1 p.m. in St. Davids, Pa.
