CHESTERTOWN, Md. — The St. Mary’s College of Maryland women’s lacrosse team fired a season-high 13 goals but fell short in a non-conference road contest, dropping a 15-13 decision to host Washington College on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, at Roy Kirby Jr. Stadium. The Seahawks, now 1-7 overall, showed offensive spark led by first-year attacker Sarah Fitter (Ellicott City, Md./Marriotts Ridge), who delivered a career-best four goals and one assist for five points.

Fitter’s performance highlighted a balanced attack that featured multiple contributors. Junior midfielder Hope Harrison (Catonsville, Md./Mount de Sales) added three goals and one assist, while junior midfielder Sanne Elling (Ocean View, Del./Sussex) chipped in three goals. Senior captain Gina Jaffurs (Leonardtown, Md./St. Mary’s Ryken) contributed one goal, two assists, three ground balls, two draw controls, and one caused turnover. Senior captain Katelin Scala (Catonsville, Md./Mount de Sales) dominated at the draw, winning a season-high eight despite the team’s 14-16 deficit in that category.

Junior goalie Allie Greeley (Havre de Grace, Md./Havre de Grace) turned in a season-best 13 saves and collected two ground balls, keeping the Seahawks in contention through late stages.

Washington College (5-2) controlled key statistical edges, outshooting St. Mary’s 37-27 and forcing 14 of the Seahawks’ 23 turnovers. The Shorewomen also held a 25-20 advantage in ground balls. Piper Evans led all scorers with six goals and one assist for seven points, while goalie Maddy Kissinger made eight saves.

The game unfolded with momentum swings. Washington College jumped to a 2-0 lead early in the first quarter before St. Mary’s responded with a 4-1 run—powered by four different scorers, including a goal and assist from Scala—to take a 4-3 edge after one period. The Shorewomen answered with four straight in the second to build a 7-4 advantage, but the Seahawks closed the half strong, scoring three of the next four to trail 9-7 at the break.

Washington College pushed the lead to 13-9 by the end of the third, with Evans and Mac Grogan each scoring twice in the frame. St. Mary’s mounted a late 4-1 surge in the fourth to close within one at 14-13 with 3:02 remaining. Grogan’s goal at 2:04 restored a two-goal cushion for the hosts. In the final minute, Greeley stopped a free-position shot with 43 seconds left, and the Seahawks transitioned cleanly for a potential equalizer. Sophomore attacker Sophia Kent (Chesterville, Md./Gunston) fired a shot that Kissinger denied, sealing the outcome.

The Seahawks’ offensive output marked a step forward after a challenging start to the season, with multiple players reaching or nearing career highs in a competitive non-conference matchup against a strong Division III program. Washington College’s draw control and turnover advantages proved decisive in a game that remained within reach until the closing minutes.

St. Mary’s next travels to face No. 16 Messiah College (3-3) on Friday, March 21, 2026, at 1 p.m. in Grantham, Pa., at Witmer Family Lacrosse Stadium.
