LEONARDTOWN, Md. — The St. Mary’s County Democratic Central Committee (SMCDCC) unanimously elected Mike Bellis as its new chair on March 11, 2026, following the resignation of AnnMarie Abell, who stepped down to launch her campaign for St. Mary’s County Commissioner President.
Bellis, a longtime Democratic organizer and elected member of the SMCDCC since 2022, assumes leadership during a period of heightened activity for the party in Southern Maryland. Bellis serves as Director of Advancement and Communications for Historic St. Mary’s City and has held roles including 2nd Vice-Chair of the committee. He resides in Leonardtown with his wife Nicole and their daughter Piper.
Abell’s tenure focused on strengthening local Democratic efforts, including a partnership with the Maryland Democratic Party to launch the “Contest Every Seat” initiative. That program aims to field Democratic candidates in every race across St. Mary’s County, with candidates now in place for the 2026 elections.
“AnnMarie built something real here,” Bellis said. “She leaves the Chairmanship stronger than she found it, and now she’s taking that same energy into one of the most important races in the county. We’re behind her all the way.”
Bellis outlined his priorities as chair: building on current momentum by registering voters, engaging new coalitions, and ensuring strong turnout in November 2026. “This is an extraordinary moment,” Bellis said. “We have candidates, we have enthusiasm, and we have a county that’s paying attention. My job is to make sure we’re ready to meet it.”
Abell expressed confidence in the transition. “Mike has the drive, the relationships, and the vision to lead this Committee forward,” she said. “I’m proud of what we built together, and I have no doubt the Central Committee is in excellent hands.”
The leadership change coincides with significant political developments in the region. The retirement of longtime Congressman Steny Hoyer has opened Maryland’s 5th Congressional District, which includes St. Mary’s County, creating a competitive race expected to draw increased voter interest and participation throughout Southern Maryland.
The SMCDCC serves as the local arm of the Maryland Democratic Party, responsible for filling certain elected office vacancies, recommending candidates, and organizing grassroots efforts. Bellis’s election positions the committee to capitalize on growing engagement amid open seats and statewide cycles.
The committee’s work under Abell emphasized broad candidate recruitment and voter outreach, setting a foundation for 2026 contests. Bellis’s background in communications, philanthropy, and community roles—including service on the Housing Authority of St. Mary’s County board—brings organizational experience to the post.
No immediate changes to committee operations were announced following the vote. The group continues to support Abell’s commissioner candidacy and prepare for upcoming elections.
