St. Mary’s County Public Schools (SMCPS) has achieved a significant milestone in educator excellence by nearly doubling its number of National Board Certified Teachers (NBCTs), reaching a total of 97 following the latest certification cycle. This surge reflects targeted district support for teachers pursuing the rigorous National Board Certification process, which emphasizes accomplished teaching practices and enhanced student outcomes.
The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) offers the sole nationally recognized certification for accomplished teaching in the United States. Developed by teachers for teachers, the certification and maintenance processes require deep content knowledge, reflective practice, and evidence-based instruction to elevate student learning and achievement.
In alignment with Maryland’s Blueprint for the Future education reform, NBCTs receive financial incentives such as stipends, priority on career ladders, and extra compensation at designated Blueprint schools. These rewards encourage participation and recognize the value of advanced certification.
During the 2024–2025 submission cycle, SMCPS supported approximately 145 candidates—including newcomers, continuing participants, and those maintaining certification. The district provided a dedicated professional development course, with 66% of candidates attending support sessions from September through May. Twelve experienced NBCTs facilitated these sessions, offering reflection opportunities and constructive feedback to guide participants through the demanding journey.
The efforts paid off: 45 staff members earned initial National Board Certification, while four completed Maintenance of Certification. Before this cohort, SMCPS had 52 active NBCTs. The addition of this group produced a 94.2% increase, elevating the total to 97 NBCTs districtwide.
NBPTS ranked SMCPS 17th nationally for 2025 based on the number of newly certified teachers, highlighting the district’s strong commitment to instructional quality in Southern Maryland. This ranking places SMCPS among leading districts for fostering advanced teacher credentials amid statewide emphasis on educator development.
The accomplishment underscores SMCPS’s investment in professional growth, particularly in Leonardtown and surrounding areas of St. Mary’s County. By expanding NBCT numbers, the district advances teacher expertise, which correlates with improved classroom instruction and student performance in a region focused on educational progress under the Blueprint framework.
This recognition arrives as SMCPS continues prioritizing high-quality teaching staff to meet evolving student needs in Southern Maryland public education.
