ST. MARY’S CITY, Md. — The St. Mary’s College of Maryland baseball team powered through a United East Conference doubleheader sweep against Rosemont College on Saturday, March 21, at the Hawk’s Nest, capturing Game 1 by a score of 11-7 and Game 2 by 13-7.

The Seahawks built early leads in both contests, overcame mid-game pushes from the visiting Ravens, and showcased strong hitting, timely extra-base hits, and effective pitching to improve their conference standing.

In the opener, St. Mary’s erupted for four runs in the first inning, fueled by defensive errors from Rosemont and capped by Will Wilson’s two-RBI double. The Seahawks tacked on two more in the second and three in the third to surge ahead 9-1. Rosemont rallied with five runs in the fourth, capitalizing on errors and key hits to trim the margin to 9-6, then added one more in the fifth to make it 9-7.

St. Mary’s responded with single runs in the fourth and fifth, including an RBI single from DJ Sifford, to regain control and secure the victory. Rhett Fletcher led the offense with two hits and two RBIs, while Wilson contributed two RBIs and two runs scored. Eli Shafer scored twice, and Connor Wilkerson drove in one run.

Colin Patterson (2-0) picked up the win in relief, throwing three innings, allowing one run, and striking out four. Rosemont’s Carson Pence (1-2) took the loss.

Game 2 saw Rosemont strike first, but St. Mary’s answered in the third with Connor Wilkerson’s RBI triple and Aaron Wathen’s RBI single for a 2-1 lead. After the Ravens tied it in the fifth, the Seahawks exploded for seven runs in the bottom half, highlighted by Wilkerson’s RBI single, Wathen’s RBI triple, errors, and a wild pitch that ballooned the advantage to 9-2.

Additional runs in the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings sealed the outcome. Wilkerson starred at the plate, going 3-for-3 with three RBIs and three runs scored. Wathen added two hits and two RBIs, while Eli Shafer contributed two hits and two RBIs.

Ryan Matthews (3-1) earned the win, striking out eight over six innings and surrendering just one earned run. Rosemont’s Solomon Denmark (0-1) was charged with the loss.

The doubleheader victory gives St. Mary’s momentum in United East Conference play. The Seahawks demonstrated resilience in holding off Rosemont’s comebacks while maintaining offensive pressure through consistent production from multiple players.

Key contributors across both games included Wilkerson’s multi-hit, multi-RBI performances, extra-base hits from Wathen and others, and solid relief and starting pitching efforts.

The Seahawks next face Marymount University in a single non-conference game on Wednesday, March 25, on the road.

This sweep adds to St. Mary’s efforts in the Southern Maryland collegiate sports scene, where local programs often balance competitive conference schedules with regional rivalries.
