Patuxent River, Md. – The U.S. Naval Air Systems Command’s Adversary and Specialized Aircraft Program Office has completed a major modernization project on a historic VH-3A Sea King helicopter and returned it to flight for the Egyptian Air Force in February.

The project, led by PMA-226’s H-3 Integrated Product Team in close coordination with NAVAIR’s Security Cooperation Office and industry partner Clayton International, upgraded a legacy airframe with contemporary systems while preserving its operational capability. The work strengthens long-standing military cooperation between the United States and Egypt.

Capt. Jason Pettitt, PMA-226 program manager, described the effort as a clear example of successful collaboration. “This milestone is a testament to the teamwork and dedication of our program office, contracting teams, and industry partners,” he said. “Together, we’ve delivered a modernized aircraft that strengthens our partnership with the Egyptian Air Force and highlights the value of collaboration with our allies.”

The helicopter, Bureau Number 150615, carries significant historical value. Originally delivered to the U.S. Marine Corps, it supported presidential transport missions during the administrations of John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson and Richard Nixon. In 1974, President Nixon presented the aircraft to Egyptian President Anwar Sadat during a visit to Egypt, turning the helicopter into a tangible symbol of diplomatic goodwill.

Technicians installed a revitalized electrical backbone, a modern “glass panel” avionics suite, and upgraded communication and navigation systems. These enhancements bring the decades-old platform in line with current operational standards without altering its core airframe.

On Feb. 2, the Egyptian Air Force performed an Acceptance Check Flight that confirmed the aircraft’s performance after the upgrades. “The Egyptian Air Force’s active involvement and commitment to quality were key to the success of this program,” Pettitt added.

Once a custom VIP interior is fully installed, the helicopter will be prepared for shipment back to Egypt, where it will re-enter service with the Egyptian Air Force.

The project demonstrates how U.S. security cooperation programs combine historical assets with modern technology to support partner nations. Southern Maryland’s Naval Air Station Patuxent River continues to serve as a central hub for such international aviation efforts, drawing on the expertise of local program offices and industry partners.

PMA-226 manages a range of adversary and specialized aircraft programs, including the H-3 series, and routinely works with foreign militaries to sustain and upgrade rotary-wing platforms. The successful return to flight of BuNo 150615 adds to a long record of bilateral projects that enhance interoperability and maintain readiness for allied forces.

This modernization effort also reflects broader U.S. strategy in the region, where reliable aviation assets contribute to stability and joint operational effectiveness. The helicopter’s journey from presidential transport in the United States to a modernized diplomatic and operational platform for Egypt underscores the enduring nature of the partnership.

Local personnel at Patuxent River played essential roles in every phase, from engineering the upgrades to coordinating the acceptance flight. Their work ensures the aircraft meets rigorous safety and performance criteria before leaving U.S. soil.

As the VH-3A prepares for its return voyage, it carries both updated technology and the legacy of more than five decades of service across two nations. The project stands as a practical example of how targeted investment in legacy platforms can extend service life and deepen international ties.
