LEONARDTOWN, MD — The St. Mary’s County Health Department is hosting a free Community Baby Shower on Saturday, May 2, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Margaret Brent Middle School-Based Health Center, located at 29675 Point Lookout Rd. in Mechanicsville. The event targets new and expecting parents who live in St. Mary’s County.
Attendees will receive giveaway items including diapers, baby wipes and essential baby supplies while supplies last. Raffle prizes feature car seats, pack ‘n plays and additional items. Families will also connect with community resources for infant care, nutrition, safety and wellness.

“Our team at the health department is proud to continue providing this wonderful event for our community,” said Dr. Meena Brewster, St. Mary’s County Health Officer. “We’re excited to celebrate our growing St. Mary’s families by offering support, free resources, and valuable education.”
Space is limited to 300 participants. Pre-registration is recommended through the health department’s online system. Those who encounter difficulty registering can call 301-475-4330 or email smchd.healthdept@maryland.gov for assistance. Eligibility requires St. Mary’s County residency and either current pregnancy or raising a baby under one year old.
The event continues the health department’s support for families through its pregnancy and early childhood programs. More information about these services is available at smchd.org/health-topics/pregnancy-and-early-childhood.
This in-person gathering follows previous drive-thru and community baby shower events organized by the department in recent years. It provides a centralized location for parents to access practical supplies and professional guidance in a supportive setting.
Southern Maryland families in St. Mary’s County often face challenges balancing work, childcare and access to resources. The Community Baby Shower addresses these needs by combining material assistance with education and networking opportunities. Local partners and health staff will be on site to answer questions about topics such as breastfeeding, safe sleep practices and developmental milestones.
The Margaret Brent Middle School-Based Health Center offers a convenient, central venue in the northern part of the county, making it accessible for residents from Lexington Park, California, Leonardtown and surrounding areas. The two-hour morning timeframe accommodates family schedules while allowing time for distribution of items and resource connections.
St. Mary’s County Health Department has a long record of hosting similar events to strengthen family health outcomes. Past gatherings have helped hundreds of local parents obtain essential supplies and learn from experts including nurses and lactation consultants.
With the May 2 date approaching, officials encourage early registration to secure a spot. The event reflects broader efforts to promote healthy pregnancies and early childhood development across Southern Maryland. No cost is associated with attendance, and all eligible families are invited to participate.
