With the federal tax deadline of April 15, 2026, approaching quickly, the Internal Revenue Service is reminding taxpayers across Maryland, including those in Southern Maryland, that time remains to file their 2025 federal income tax returns electronically and request direct deposit for any refund. Filing and paying any amount owed by the deadline helps taxpayers avoid interest charges and certain penalties.
The IRS expects about 164 million individual returns for tax year 2025 to be filed by Wednesday, April 15. Electronic filing reduces errors because tax software performs calculations, flags common mistakes, and prompts users for missing information. Most taxpayers who e-file and choose direct deposit receive their refunds within 21 days.
IRS.gov provides round-the-clock access to tools and resources. The Let Us Help You page offers tips, tools, and answers to frequently asked questions. Taxpayers can also create or access an IRS Individual Online Account to view tax account information securely, manage payments, check refund status, and communicate with the agency.
Qualified taxpayers with adjusted gross income of $89,000 or less in 2025 can use IRS Free File to prepare and file their federal returns at no cost through guided tax software from eight trusted partners. Those comfortable preparing their own returns, regardless of income, can use IRS Free File Fillable Forms. Military members and some veterans qualify for free preparation and e-filing through the Department of Defense MilTax program.
The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance and Tax Counseling for the Elderly programs deliver free basic tax preparation to eligible individuals through IRS-certified volunteers at sites nationwide. In Southern Maryland, LifeStyles of Maryland operates VITA sites serving residents of St. Mary’s, Calvert, and Charles counties with household income under $69,000. Appointments run through April 15 and can be scheduled online or by phone at local offices in Lexington Park and Prince Frederick.
Taxpayers who owe taxes can make payments directly from a checking or savings account through their IRS Individual Online Account. Additional electronic options include IRS Direct Pay, debit or credit cards, digital wallets, the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System, and electronic funds withdrawal. Those unable to pay the full amount by April 15 should pay what they can and apply for an online payment plan, with most receiving immediate approval or denial.
Individuals who need more time to file can request an automatic six-month extension to October 15, 2026. An extension to file does not extend the time to pay. Taxpayers must estimate and pay any taxes owed by April 15 to avoid penalties and interest. To request the extension electronically, use IRS Free File or make a payment via Direct Pay, debit card, credit card, or digital wallet and designate it for the extension. Paper filers can mail Form 4868, postmarked by April 15, to the address in the instructions.
Maryland state income tax returns for 2025 are also due April 15, 2026, aligning with the federal deadline. The Comptroller of Maryland began accepting returns on January 26, 2026. Southern Maryland residents can combine federal and state preparation at local VITA sites where available.
The IRS urges taxpayers to use IRS.gov for the quickest information and to file electronically when possible. Those expecting a refund face no penalty for filing after April 15 as long as the return is complete, but filing early secures the refund sooner.
Local VITA programs in St. Mary’s City, Lexington Park, and Prince Frederick provide in-person or drop-off assistance tailored to lower-income households and seniors in Southern Maryland communities. These volunteer efforts help ensure residents meet both federal and state obligations without added cost.
