WALDORF, Md. — A 64-year-old motorcyclist from White Plains died Friday night after a car ran a red light and struck him at the intersection of Maryland Route 228 and Bunker Hill Road in Waldorf, authorities said. The vehicle then fled the scene, leaving the rider dead at the site.

Maryland State Police troopers from the La Plata Barrack and deputies from the Charles County Sheriff’s Office responded around 7:49 p.m. on April 3, 2026, to reports of a serious collision at the busy Southern Maryland crossroads. Due to the severity, the Maryland State Police CRASH Team took over the investigation.

Preliminary findings show a 2008 Infiniti G35 traveled eastbound on Route 228, also known as Berry Road, and entered the intersection against a steady red traffic signal. At the same time, Scott Beland, 64, of White Plains, operated a 2018 Harley-Davidson motorcycle westbound on Route 228. He made a left turn onto Bunker Hill Road on a steady green left-turn arrow.

The Infiniti struck the motorcycle in the intersection. After the impact, the Infiniti lost control, hit a metal guardrail in the median, and then continued from the scene. It turned left onto Sharpersville Road, where the occupants abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot, according to witnesses who described multiple males inside the Infiniti.

Beland suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. No other injuries were reported in the initial investigation.

The crash highlights ongoing traffic safety concerns at intersections along Route 228 in Charles County, a heavily traveled corridor connecting residential areas, shopping centers, and commuter routes in Southern Maryland. State police continue to examine evidence, including traffic signals, vehicle damage, and witness accounts, to reconstruct the sequence of events.

Anyone who witnessed the crash or can identify the occupants of the Infiniti is urged to contact Sergeant J. Zimmerman of the MSP CRASH Team at (301) 392-1231 or email a statement to justin.zimmerman@maryland.gov. The case number is 26-MSP-010337. The investigation remains active and will be forwarded to the Charles County State’s Attorney’s Office for review of potential charges.

This incident marks another fatal hit-and-run in the region, where authorities have previously noted challenges with drivers fleeing serious collisions. Police ask the public to come forward with any information, including video from nearby businesses or vehicles, to help bring accountability in the case.
