St. Mary’s College of Maryland men’s lacrosse team snapped a three-game losing streak with a 12-8 non-conference victory over the University of Mary Washington on Tuesday night at Jamie L. Roberts Stadium in St. Mary’s City.

The Seahawks improved to 9-7 overall with the April 21, 2026, win. The Eagles fell to 7-8 and closed their regular season. Sophomores Owen Wynot of Kent Island and Gavin Phipps of Mayo combined for seven goals to lead the attack in front of the home crowd in Southern Maryland.

St. Mary’s College built momentum quickly. Wynot scored the first two goals within five minutes for a 5-1 start. Mary Washington narrowed the gap to 5-3 with two rapid scores, but the Seahawks responded with a 5-0 run to take a 10-3 lead with 12:06 remaining in the second quarter. After the Eagles added one more goal before halftime, the teams went scoreless for the rest of the half, sending St. Mary’s College into the break ahead 10-4.

The six-goal cushion held through the third quarter as each side scored once. Mary Washington won the fourth quarter 3-1, including a goal from midfield by Christian Fleming as time expired, but could not overcome the early deficit.

The Seahawks held slight edges in key statistical categories. They outshot the Eagles 41-40 and won the ground ball battle 31-22. Senior Matteo Ciccarello of Crofton won 12 of 20 faceoffs, contributing to a .619 faceoff winning percentage for the game.

Wynot finished with four goals for the second consecutive game and added three ground balls. Phipps recorded a career-high three goals for his first hat trick. Sophomore midfielder Carson Giannelli of Perry Hall added one goal and two assists. Senior defenseman Joe Szymanski of Easton led the defense with four ground balls and three caused turnovers. Sophomore goalie Ty Spencer of Hanover made nine saves.

For Mary Washington, eight different players scored, and goalie Ryan D’Angelo stopped 14 shots.

The victory gives the Seahawks positive momentum as they prepare for Senior Day and a key United East Conference matchup. St. Mary’s College hosts Pitt-Bradford at 3 p.m. Saturday, April 25, 2026, at Jamie L. Roberts Stadium in St. Mary’s City. The game marks the final home contest of the regular season.

Southern Maryland’s public honors college continues to balance strong academics with competitive athletics. The men’s lacrosse program draws local talent from across the region, including players from Kent Island, Mayo, Crofton, Perry Hall and Easton. The team’s home field in St. Mary’s City provides a central location for fans from Calvert, Charles and St. Mary’s counties to support Seahawk athletics.
