ST. MARY’S CITY, Md. — The St. Mary’s College of Maryland baseball team delivered a commanding 15-2 victory over Wilson College on April 21 in Chambersburg, Pa., powering head coach Bernie Stratchko to his 100th career win with the Seahawks program.
The Seahawks improved to 9-17 overall with an offensive outburst that produced 14 hits and 15 runs across five innings. Wilson fell to 5-24-1. Stratchko, who took over the program in 2016 as a La Plata native and McDonough High School graduate, reached the milestone in his 10th season leading the Division III squad that competes in the United East Conference.
St. Mary’s seized control early. In the second inning Aaron Wathen launched a two-run home run, Kyle Catanzaro added a solo shot and Eli Shafer drove in a run with a groundout for a 4-0 lead. The Seahawks poured on four more runs in the third. Wathen delivered an RBI double, Will Wilson ripped a two-run single and Layne Lesko added a sacrifice fly to make it 8-0.

Wilson scored once in the bottom of the third, but St. Mary’s answered with three runs in the fourth on a Catanzaro RBI single and Corey Brown sacrifice fly. The fifth inning sealed the outcome as Rhett Fletcher hit a two-run homer and Brown followed with a two-run single, stretching the margin to 15-1.
On the mound Colin Bashor earned the win in his strongest outing of the season. The right-hander worked 6 2/3 innings, allowing one hit and two runs, one earned, while striking out 11 and walking seven. Brady Hopkins recorded the final out.
Offensively Wathen went 3-for-4 with four runs scored and three RBI. Catanzaro collected three hits and two RBI. Fletcher and Brown each drove in two and three runs respectively in a balanced attack that featured multiple extra-base hits.
The win continues a stretch for the Seahawks that includes recent competitive games against strong regional opponents. St. Mary’s plays at No. 8 Salisbury on April 22 and hosts Penn State Brandywine on April 25 at the Hawk’s Nest in St. Mary’s City.
Stratchko, who previously served as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Frostburg State, has built the program through consistent recruiting across Maryland and the mid-Atlantic. His 100th victory underscores steady progress for a team that blends veteran leadership with emerging contributors.
Southern Maryland’s collegiate baseball scene benefits from St. Mary’s presence alongside other local programs. The Seahawks draw student-athletes from Charles, St. Mary’s and Calvert counties who balance academics with competition at the Division III level. The college, located on the banks of the St. Mary’s River, emphasizes both athletic excellence and community engagement in the region.
This milestone arrives as the 2026 season heads into its final weeks. St. Mary’s will look to build momentum with remaining United East contests and non-conference matchups. Fans can follow the team through live streams and updates on the official athletics site.
The program continues to develop talent that contributes to the local sports fabric in Southern Maryland, where high school and college baseball remain popular spring traditions. Stratchko’s achievement reflects dedication to player development and competitive success in a challenging conference landscape.
