ST. MARY’S CITY, Md. — The St. Mary’s College of Maryland men’s lacrosse team returned to winning form with a 12-8 non-conference victory over the University of Mary Washington on April 21, snapping a three-game skid behind a dominant first quarter.

The Seahawks improved to 9-7 overall while the Eagles fell to 7-8. Sophomores Owen Wynot of Kent Island and Gavin Phipps of Mayo combined for seven goals to lead the Southern Maryland-based program. St. Mary’s erupted for eight goals in the opening period to seize early control at JLR Stadium.

Wynot opened the scoring with two goals in the first five minutes for a 5-1 advantage. Mary Washington narrowed the gap to 5-3 with two quick tallies, but the Seahawks responded with a five-goal run to push the lead to 10-3 midway through the second quarter. After Tanner Boone scored for the Eagles, both teams went scoreless for the remainder of the half, sending St. Mary’s into the break with a 10-4 edge.

The third quarter saw each side add one goal, preserving the Seahawks’ six-goal cushion. Mary Washington claimed the fourth quarter 3-1, including a midfield goal by Christian Fleming as time expired, but could not overcome the early deficit.

St. Mary’s held a slight 41-40 edge in shots and controlled the ground ball battle 31-22. Senior Matteo Ciccarello of Crofton won 12 of 20 faceoffs, contributing to a .619 faceoff win rate for the game. Sophomore goalie Ty Spencer of Hanover made nine saves.

Wynot posted four goals for the second consecutive game and added three ground balls. Phipps notched a career-high three goals for his first hat trick. Sophomore midfielder Carson Giannelli of Perry Hall recorded one goal and two assists. Senior defenseman Joe Szymanski of Easton anchored the defense with four ground balls and three caused turnovers. Ciccarello collected nine ground balls.

Mary Washington received scoring from eight different players, with goalkeeper Ryan D’Angelo making 14 saves.

The victory highlights the continued development of the Seahawks program under head coach Tom Mulvey. St. Mary’s draws student-athletes from across Southern Maryland, including Anne Arundel, Queen Anne’s and Talbot counties, blending local talent with the college’s liberal arts focus on the historic St. Mary’s River campus.

Local players have made significant impacts this season. Wynot and Phipps, both sophomores, have emerged as key offensive threats. Ciccarello and Szymanski provide veteran leadership on faceoffs and defense, reflecting the program’s emphasis on recruiting and developing players from the region.

St. Mary’s competes in the United East Conference and maintains a strong presence in Maryland collegiate lacrosse. The team balances competitive schedules with academic demands at one of the state’s public honors colleges.

The Seahawks host Pitt Bradford on April 25 at 3 p.m. in St. Mary’s City for Senior Day. Pitt Bradford enters with an 11-3 record and 1-0 conference mark. The contest offers St. Mary’s an opportunity to honor graduating seniors while pushing toward a strong finish to the 2026 season.

Lacrosse remains a popular spring sport in Southern Maryland, with strong high school programs feeding into college teams at St. Mary’s College and other regional institutions. The Seahawks’ performance continues to build excitement for local fans who follow both scholastic and collegiate competition in Charles, St. Mary’s and Calvert counties.

Season statistics show St. Mary’s averaging competitive outputs in a challenging non-conference and conference slate. The April 21 win demonstrates resilience after recent setbacks and sets a positive tone heading into the final stretch of the regular season.
