St. Marys City, Md.- St. Marys College of Maryland womens lacrosse team secured its fifth consecutive United East Conference tournament championship with a commanding 24-2 victory over Wilson College on April 25 at Jamie L. Roberts Stadium. The win advanced the Seahawks as the No. 1 seed into the United East ConferenceAllegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Crossover Championship.

St. Marys College improved to 6-10 overall while handing Wilson College an 8-10 record. The Seahawks dominated from the start, building an 8-0 lead before Wilson scored. They closed the game on a 14-0 run after Wilson narrowed the gap to 10-2. The performance showcased the teams depth and defensive intensity in front of local fans in Southern Maryland.

Junior midfielder Sanne Elling of Ocean View, Del., reached a personal milestone with her 100th career point on an unassisted goal in the second quarter. Elling finished with five points on four goals and one assist while adding a career-high four caused turnovers. First-year attacker Sarah Fitter of Ellicott City led the offense with a career-high six goals. Junior midfielder Hope Harrison of Catonsville posted career-bests with six points on four goals and two assists.

Senior captain Carsyn Smith of Crownsville anchored the defense with five caused turnovers and a career-best eight ground balls. Senior captain Katelin Scala of Catonsville won a game-high six draw controls and contributed six points on two goals and four assists. Allie Greeley of Havre de Grace made six saves before Lilly Gunder of Perkiomenville, Pa., delivered 15 minutes of shutout relief in the fourth quarter.

St. Marys College controlled play statistically. The Seahawks outshot Wilson 48-16, forced 23 of the visitors 26 turnovers for a plus-12 margin, and won 30 of 32 ground balls on 50-50 contests. Draw controls were closely contested with St. Marys edging Wilson 14-12.

The victory marks the fifth straight United East tournament title for the program based in Southern Maryland. St. Marys College will host No. 1 seed Alfred State College of New York on Saturday, May 2, at Jamie L. Roberts Stadium in the crossover championship. Alfred State advanced with a 16-3 win over Pittsburgh-Bradford in the AMCC divisional final. Game time remains to be determined.

This achievement highlights the continued success of collegiate athletics at St. Marys College of Maryland, a public liberal arts institution on the St. Marys River.
