Dr. Saher S. Sabri, chief of interventional radiology for MedStar Health and professor of radiology at Georgetown University School of Medicine, has assumed the office of president of the Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR).

He began his one-year term on April 14. SIR is the leading professional organization for physicians who specialize in minimally invasive, image-guided treatments.

“As I step into the role of president, I look forward to continuing strong advocacy for interventional radiologists and ensuring our members are recognized for the value they provide to the healthcare system and improving patient access to high-quality care,” Sabri said.

Sabri specializes in minimally invasive, image-guided therapy for a wide variety of conditions, including peripheral vascular disease, aortic aneurysms, portal hypertension, uterine fibroids, prostate hypertrophy, musculoskeletal pain management, and local/regional therapy for liver, kidney and lung cancer.

He emphasizes individualized treatment plans tailored to each patient’s specific diagnosis and goals. “I spend as much time as possible with my patients in order to present them with options that are most relevant to their specific diagnosis and treatment goals,” Sabri said. “Providing patient-centered care means that I am available to my patients before, during and after the procedure.”

Southern Maryland patients benefit directly from this expertise. MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center in Clinton offers advanced interventional radiology services, allowing local residents to receive cutting-edge, minimally invasive care close to home rather than traveling to downtown Washington, D.C. These procedures often result in shorter hospital stays, faster recovery and reduced risk compared with traditional surgery.

Sabri graduated from the University of Jordan Faculty of Medicine. He completed a residency in diagnostic radiology at the University of Iowa and a fellowship in vascular and interventional radiology at the University of Virginia. He is a fellow of the Society of Interventional Radiology, holds American Board of Radiology certification in vascular and interventional radiology, and serves as a board examiner. He is widely published and lectures nationally and internationally.

The leadership role comes at a time when interventional radiology continues to expand treatment options for common conditions affecting Southern Maryland residents, including vascular disease, cancer and chronic pain.
