The Charles County Board of County Commissioners received a briefing from representatives of the Navy Surface Warfare Center Indian Head during their May 5 business meeting. The update covered ongoing capital improvements at the facility, which plays a critical role in national defense through research, development, testing, evaluation and manufacturing of energetic materials.
The base is focused on modernizing infrastructure, strengthening the Munitions Industrial Base and partnering with organizations such as the U.S. Bomb Technician Association. Indian Head is one of Charles County’s largest employers and a major economic driver for the region.
Commissioners also conducted their annual add/delete work session as part of final preparations for the Fiscal Year 2027 budget. The session allows the board to propose adjustments to any fund before final adoption.
In actions on boards and commissions, the commissioners appointed Britt Toku as a member of the Planning Commission.
During approval items, the board approved a budget transfer of $80,000 to address emergency HVAC replacements and repairs at various county facilities. They also passed a resolution formally recognizing Juneteenth as a holiday and outlining community events to highlight its historical importance.
Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States and holds special significance in Southern Maryland. The resolution reflects the county’s commitment to honoring this cultural observance.
