Community Harvest Network and Republic Services will host a Volunteer Day of Service on Monday, May 18, in Huntingtown to help expand local food access and combat food insecurity across Southern Maryland.

Volunteers will unload and stock donations, assemble shelving to expand storage capacity, and complete interior and exterior beautification projects at the facility located at 6021 Solomons Island Road. The event runs from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The day is made possible by a $250,000 National Neighborhood Promise® grant from the Republic Services Charitable Foundation. The funding supports long-term solutions to food insecurity, including the development of new classroom space for the Culinary Program and strengthening the End Hunger Food Bank, which serves families through a network of 40 food pantry partners.

Community Harvest Network, formerly known as End Hunger in Calvert County, is a 501(c)3 nonprofit dedicated to ending hunger one family at a time. The organization provides food assistance and empowers young adults with learning differences through hands-on culinary education, ServSafe Food Handler certification, and job placement assistance.

“This space was designed for the community,” said Patty Stine, Executive Director. “We wanted to create a place where families feel welcome, where children can learn through joyful play, and where connections between people grow naturally.”

The Volunteer Day of Service is part of a broader initiative to strengthen Community Harvest Network’s ability to address food insecurity through sustainable solutions. The Culinary Program equips individuals with learning disabilities with foundational culinary, workplace readiness, and life skills while the Food Bank program strengthens feeding efforts across the region.

Republic Services Charitable Foundation supports nonprofit organizations and projects that promote sustainable neighborhoods. The Foundation helps advance Republic Services’ 2030 Sustainability Goal to create sustainable neighborhoods through strong community partnerships for 45 million people.

To celebrate the day, community members, families, and educators are invited to participate in hands-on activities and connect with local organizations. The event offers an opportunity to support Southern Maryland families while contributing to long-term solutions for food access.
