Our Spotlight on the Arts for June 2026 shines brightly on visual artist, Pat Morrison!

How would you describe your art form?

Most of my work is a combination of linocut prints and tempera painting. This combination allows me to put a lot of color into my work.

 Do you have formal training?

I have a BFA in Communication Arts and Design from Virginia Commonwealth University. I utilize my design skills in planning every composition. After graduation, I worked as a freelance editorial illustrator for 20+ years using various media including linocut.

Do you have a favorite style or other aspect of your artwork?

I enjoy linocut and the textural effects of printmaking. Sometimes a print will have interesting “happy accidents” where the ink and paper were pressed together.

Tell us about the design Sunset Cruising that you created for the St. Mary’s County Arts Council fundraiser.

St. Mary’s County borders the Chesapeake Bay and three rivers. I wanted to capture that in my t-shirt design by making it a water scene reflective of the beauty of Southern Maryland.

Which galleries feature your work?

Currently, I show my work at CalvART Gallery in Prince Frederick, St. Mary’s County Art Council Gallery & Gift Shop, and Sophia Street Studios in Fredericksburg. I also have linocut cards at Annmarie Gardens in Solomons and the Jefferson Patterson Park & Museum in St. Leonard.

What are your other interests outside of your art?

Other interests outside of my art include fossil collecting, gardening, swimming and traveling with my daughter.

Is there anything else that you would like to share with us?

When I stopped being an illustrator, I taught art for various public schools.  It was during this time that I started creating art for galleries. This was a big change from illustration as I could create any image and not have to connect it to a manuscript or advertisement.
