The body that oversees the state’s multibillion-dollar education reform plan is seeking applications for two seats set to come open July 1.
Applications will be accepted until 5 p.m. Friday from people who want to join the seven-member Blueprint for Maryland’s Future Accountability and Implementation Board, also known as the AIB.
An AIB nomination committee will review the applications for the seats currently held by AIB Chair Isiah “Ike” Leggett and Robin Werner, and recommend replacements to Gov. Wes Moore.
Leggett, the former Montgomery County executive, has served and chaired the board since it first met in November 2021. Werner, who works as director of teaching and learning for public schools in Talbot County, was appointed in August to replace Mara Doss, a former associate vice president for teaching, learning and student success at Prince George’s Community College who attended her last meeting in June 2025.
All applicants are expected to have knowledge in areas such as postsecondary education policy, teaching in public schools and “strategies used by top-performing state and national education systems in the world.”
Part of the application includes a 500-word essay in response to this question: “What will you contribute to the success of the Accountability and Implementation Board?”
Applicants must also check “yes” or “no” to several other questions such as delinquencies on federal, state, or local taxes or other debt; complaints of discrimination; and “are you now under any violation of law excluding minor traffic offenses?”
The committee must submit at least two names for each seat to Gov. Wes Moore (D), who has 30 days after receiving the list to name the new board members, who will serve six-year terms.
The governor can reappoint Leggett and Werner, should they apply for reappointment.
The committee is slated to announce candidates whose names will be forwarded to the governor in July.
The Blueprint board, which held a joint meeting Thursday with the state Board of Education, is scheduled to convene again on June 18.
