LEONARDTOWN — St. Mary’s County Recreation and Parks will mark National Trails Day on June 6 with self-guided nature walks on trails throughout the county.

The department encourages adults, teens and children to explore local parks and reconnect with nature through two activity options available on its website. A Nature Presence Walk is designed for adults, while a kid-friendly Nature Adventure Walk is available for younger participants. Individuals can download, print and fold the chosen activity page to use during their walk.

Participants may select any county park trail. Myrtle Point Waterfront Park, Chaptico Park, Baggett Park, Fifth District Park, Chancellor’s Run Regional Park and Dorsey Park offer wooded nature trails of varying lengths. Additional options include the paved Three Notch Trail and walking paths at Lexington Manor Passive Park.

As part of the observance, the first 500 people who visit the Recreation and Parks Main Office in Leonardtown during June and share which trail or park they visited will receive a free National Trails Day “Sunny the Squirrel” sticker. The office is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

National Trails Day is observed annually across the country on the first Saturday in June to promote the use of trails, outdoor recreation and stewardship of natural resources. The event provides an opportunity for people of all ages to get outside, stay active and discover local natural areas.

Maps of all Recreation and Parks facilities and additional information on county parks are available on the department’s website.
