BALTIMORE — Lawsuits are targeting major online sports betting platforms such as DraftKings and FanDuel, claiming the companies used features designed to encourage excessive play and maximize user losses.
Plaintiffs allege that operators employed tactics including “risk-free” bets, VIP host programs, constant notifications and microbetting options. Some suits also claim companies failed to meet state-mandated responsible gaming protections intended to help users manage their activity.
The legal actions follow the expansion of sports wagering after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the federal ban on sports betting in 2018. Many states, including Maryland, have since legalized and regulated the activity. Maryland’s program launched with retail sportsbooks in December 2021 and mobile betting in November 2022.
The suits seek to address what plaintiffs describe as deceptive practices that contributed to significant financial harm. Industry operators have maintained that they provide tools for responsible play and comply with state regulations.
ConsumerNotice.org has published overviews of the litigation and is making attorneys available for interviews on the legal theories, specific claims against DraftKings and FanDuel, and potential regulatory implications.
Maryland residents who participate in sports wagering can review state resources on responsible gaming through the Maryland Lottery and Gaming website or contact 1-800-GAMBLER for confidential assistance. Full details on the lawsuits are available at the links provided by ConsumerNotice.org.
