LA PLATA — A Charles County man won $150,000 in the Maryland Lottery’s Pick 5 game after placing three $1 straight bets using his employee number.

The winner, who has worked for the federal government for nearly 10 years and enjoys roller skating in his free time, said he typically plays Pick 5 in the same manner. All three tickets were straight bets, so when the numbers matched the evening drawing on June 5, each paid $50,000.

He purchased the tickets at Lady’s Liquors at 6474 Crain Highway in La Plata a few hours before the drawing. The winner said he fell asleep before the numbers were drawn and did not check the tickets until the next morning. After scanning them on his phone, he confirmed the win.

Speaking June 9 when he claimed the prize at Lottery headquarters, the winner said he had not shared the news with anyone, including his children, but planned to surprise them. He said he intends to use the winnings to pay bills, help other family members and possibly travel.

Lady’s Liquors receives a $500 bonus for each top-prize-winning Pick 5 ticket, for a total of $1,500 from the three winning plays.

Maryland Lottery games such as Pick 5 offer fixed payouts for straight bets when numbers match in exact order. Winners are encouraged to claim prizes promptly and consider financial planning. The Maryland Lottery provides resources on responsible play through its website.

The La Plata winner’s story reflects the occasional excitement lottery participants experience in Southern Maryland communities. Local retailers like Lady’s Liquors also benefit from bonus payments when they sell winning tickets.
