LA PLATA — The Charles County Sheriff’s Office announced the passing of Retired K-9 Cooper on June 10.
Cooper, a Belgian Malinois, served the agency from 2014 until his retirement in 2022 alongside handler Retired M/Cpl. Renee Cuyler. During his career, he specialized in narcotics detection and patrol duties. In 2015, he earned a Bronze Medal in the World Police & Fire Games for excellence in narcotics detection.
Cooper joined the Sheriff’s Office after former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger provided a grant to support K-9 units across the country. He worked faithfully with Cuyler for eight years before both retired together. Cuyler had served the agency for 25 years.

In retirement, Cooper enjoyed belly rubs, playing fetch, crunching on ice cubes, and staying close to family members who offered gentle pats. He brought warmth and companionship to his home during his later years.
K-9 units like Cooper’s play important roles in local law enforcement by assisting with drug detection and patrol operations. These teams support public safety efforts in Charles County and throughout Southern Maryland.
The Sheriff’s Office expressed gratitude for Cooper’s years of service and extended condolences to Cuyler and her family. Cooper is remembered for his devotion and the positive impact he had on the community he served.
