LA PLATA — The College of Southern Maryland Athletics Department has hired Thomas Wasley as the new head coach of the Women’s Soccer program.
Wasley brings more than 20 years of coaching experience and deep roots within the DMV soccer community. Throughout his coaching career, he has worked with numerous collegiate and youth soccer programs, including coaching positions with DC Soccer, Stafford Soccer and Vienna Soccer. His background in player development, combined with his passion for mentorship and education, makes him an addition to the Hawks’ athletic family.
A former collegiate student-athlete, Wasley began his playing career at William Carey University in Mississippi, where he was part of a conference championship team. After overcoming a significant injury and surgery, he returned to the DMV area and continued his collegiate career at Marymount University in Arlington, Virginia. During his time at Marymount, Wasley excelled both on the field and in the classroom, earning All-Academic honors, receiving the James Shelton Student-Athlete Award and serving on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
“My college soccer experience shaped who I am as both a coach and a person,” said Wasley. “It is my goal to help players understand the privilege of representing and playing for a college soccer team. Not everyone has the opportunity to compete at this level. It takes sacrifice, commitment, and hard work, and I want our student-athletes to appreciate that opportunity while striving for excellence both on and off the field.”
Wasley credits many of his coaching influences to his collegiate experiences, particularly his time at Marymount University.
“I have tremendous appreciation for the coaches who invested their time and energy into helping me develop,” Wasley said. “My head coach at Marymount showed me what it takes to build a competitive college program. Watching the dedication and effort required to lead student-athletes inspired me to pursue coaching and continues to influence my approach today.”
In addition to his coaching experience, Wasley brings a strong academic foundation. He earned a Master’s Degree in Exercise Science from Old Dominion University in 2023 and incorporates principles of sports science, performance training and athlete development into his coaching philosophy.
“My goal is to help student-athletes become successful in all areas of life,” Wasley said. “Soccer is an incredible vehicle for teaching resilience, discipline, teamwork, and leadership. I want our players to leave this program not only as better soccer players but as better people who are prepared for success in their careers and communities.”
Wasley’s passion for the sport runs deep. In addition to his collegiate playing experience, he competed for the Northern Virginia Royals Pro Feeder Team and was selected as an alternate for the Virginia State Team.
The new Hawks coach holds a USSF B License and a United Soccer Coaches Premier Diploma.
“We are excited to welcome Thomas to the College of Southern Maryland,” said athletic director Dr. Smallwood. “His experience, leadership, commitment to student-athlete success, and strong ties to the region make him an excellent fit for our program. We look forward to seeing the positive impact he will have on our women’s soccer student-athletes and the future of the program.”
As he begins his tenure at CSM, Wasley is eager to build a competitive and student-centered culture.
“I want to bring an exciting brand of soccer that our players can enjoy and embrace,” said Wasley. “Most importantly, I want our team to be part of something bigger than themselves. Success comes through commitment to each other, accountability, and a shared belief in what we are building together.”
The College of Southern Maryland Women’s Soccer program will begin preparations for the upcoming season under Wasley’s leadership immediately.
Southern Maryland residents interested in supporting local college athletics can follow the Hawks Women’s Soccer program through the College of Southern Maryland Athletics Department. Community members are encouraged to attend upcoming games and events.
