PATUXENT RIVER — A Temporary Flight Restriction is in place around Naval Air Station Patuxent River, banning all aircraft operations, including Unmanned Aircraft Systems commonly known as drones, within a five-mile radius.

The restriction runs from Wednesday, June 17, through Monday, June 22, 2026, in support of air show operations. It affects portions of St. Mary’s County as well as Lusby and Solomons in Calvert County.

Individuals who operate a drone within the TFR should expect a law enforcement response. Deputies may document the incident and forward the information to the Federal Aviation Administration for investigation and potential enforcement action.

Unauthorized UAS operating in the restricted area may also be subject to counter-UAS mitigation measures. Drone operators assume full responsibility for their aircraft and remain liable for any injury, property damage or other consequences resulting from loss of control or disabling of their aircraft.

Residents and visitors planning to fly drones in Southern Maryland during this period are advised to check all applicable FAA airspace restrictions before operating any UAS and to fly responsibly.

The TFR supports the annual air show at NAS Patuxent River, a major event that draws large crowds to the region each year. Such restrictions are standard for major aviation events to ensure safety for performers, spectators and the general public.

Southern Maryland communities near the base can expect increased security measures and law enforcement presence related to the air show and associated flight restrictions. Residents who do not intend to operate drones are not affected by the TFR but should remain aware of heightened activity in the area.

Drone operators who need to fly for legitimate purposes are encouraged to verify the exact boundaries of the restricted airspace through official FAA resources, such as the B4UFLY app or the FAA’s temporary flight restriction map, and to plan operations outside the five-mile radius if necessary.

Anyone with questions about the restriction or air show operations can contact NAS Patuxent River public affairs or monitor official Navy and FAA channels for updates.
