SEATTLE — The United States Men’s National Team clinched first place in Group D at the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a disciplined 2-0 victory over Australia on Friday night at Lumen Field.

An own goal by Australian defender Cameron Burgess in the 11th minute and a header from Alex Freeman just before halftime gave the USMNT all three points. Combined with Paraguay’s 1-0 win over Türkiye later that night, the result secured top spot in the group for the co-hosts with one match remaining.

Matt Freese started in goal and recorded a clean sheet, making several important interventions as the United States controlled large portions of the match. The victory marked the first time since 1930 that the United States has won consecutive matches at a men’s World Cup and delivered the team’s first clean sheet in a World Cup since that year.

Folarin Balogun created the opening goal with a powerful run down the left. His cut-back into the penalty area was turned into his own net by Burgess under pressure. The early goal allowed the United States to settle and dictate the tempo in front of a sold-out crowd.

The second goal arrived in the 43rd minute. Following a corner, Sergiño Dest’s shot deflected high into the air. Freeman rose highest to head the ball into the net. A VAR review confirmed Freeman was onside, and the goal stood, sending the United States into halftime with a 2-0 lead.

Australia pushed forward after the break and created several dangerous moments, but the USMNT defense remained compact. Freese was called into action at key moments but was largely untroubled as the hosts managed the game professionally in the second half.

The result was notable because it came without captain Christian Pulisic, who missed the match with a calf injury. Despite his absence, the United States maintained attacking threat through Balogun and created quality chances while remaining defensively solid.

With six points and a superior goal difference, the USMNT has now secured first place in Group D regardless of the result in their final group match against Türkiye on Thursday in Los Angeles. The team can approach that game with the knowledge that they have already achieved one of their primary objectives at this World Cup.

Australia, who started the tournament with a 2-0 win over Türkiye, now sit on three points and will face Paraguay in their final group match with their knockout hopes on the line.

Freeman’s goal was a personal milestone. The 21-year-old defender scored his first World Cup goal in front of a home crowd and was mobbed by teammates after the VAR confirmation. His performance highlighted the depth available to coach Mauricio Pochettino.

The match was physical and competitive throughout. The United States dominated possession and created the better opportunities, while Australia relied on set pieces and quick counters that were largely neutralized by the American back line.

Pochettino now has the freedom to manage player workload in the final group game. With qualification and first place already secured, the coach can give minutes to squad players and prepare key personnel for the knockout stage.

The result continues a strong start for the co-hosts. After a convincing 4-1 opening win over Paraguay, the United States followed up with another professional performance. The combination of attacking quality, defensive organization, and resilience without key players has positioned the team well as the tournament enters its knockout phase.
