LEONARDTOWN, Md. — A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect for St. Mary’s County and much of Maryland until 9 p.m. Monday as conditions remain favorable for strong to severe thunderstorms.
The watch, issued by the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center at 2:10 p.m. Monday, covers all of Maryland, including Calvert, Charles, and St. Mary’s counties. It remains in effect until 9 p.m.
Forecasters expect showers and thunderstorms to develop across the region during the afternoon and evening. Some storms could produce damaging winds or large hail.

As of mid-afternoon, skies over Southern Maryland were partly to mostly cloudy with temperatures in the mid to upper 80s and high humidity. A 50 to 70 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms was forecast for the remainder of the day.
A Severe Thunderstorm Watch means conditions are favorable for severe thunderstorms, but does not mean severe weather is occurring or imminent. Residents should monitor local forecasts and be prepared to take shelter if a warning is issued.
The National Weather Service recommends having multiple ways to receive warnings, including a NOAA Weather Radio, and moving to an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building if severe weather approaches.
