GLEN BURNIE, Md. — The Maryland Department of Transportation and Maryland State Police are urging motorists to drive safely this summer after nine people died in crashes across the state between June 16 and June 21.

As of June 22, 173 people have been killed on Maryland roadways this year, down from 207 at the same point in 2025. June has already seen 22 fatalities.

Officials are emphasizing several key safety reminders for drivers during the busy summer travel season:

  • Obey posted speed limits, especially in work zones.
  • Move over for vehicles with flashing lights or slow down if changing lanes is not safe.
  • Avoid distractions, including phones and activities that take attention off the road.
  • Never drive impaired by alcohol or drugs.
  • Wear seat belts on every trip, in both the front and back seats.
  • Share the road safely with pedestrians, bicyclists and motorcyclists.
  • Avoid aggressive driving and allow extra time to reach destinations.

Preliminary data shows the 173 fatalities this year include 81 drivers, 26 passengers, 39 pedestrians, 2 bicyclists and 25 motorcyclists.

Each fatal crash represents a life lost, officials said. The agencies continue to promote the Zero Deaths initiative and encourage drivers to visit ZeroDeathsMD.gov for more information on highway safety efforts.
