Calvert County Public Schools is launching its Grab ‘n Go Summer Meals Program to help ensure children ages 2 to 18 have access to nutritious food during the summer months when school is not in session. The initiative, supported by the Calvert County Department of Community Resources and the Calvert County Family Network, will distribute weekly meal kits at three locations beginning July 1.

Each kit contains five breakfast meals, five lunch meals and milk, providing a full week of nutrition for participating children. Distributions will take place on Wednesdays from July 1 through August 5 at Huntingtown High School from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., Southern Middle School from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. and Calvert High School from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.

Summer can be a challenging time for families who depend on school meals during the academic year. Without those daily options, many children face gaps in consistent access to balanced nutrition. Programs like this one help bridge that divide by offering convenient, ready-to-go meals that families can pick up weekly.

The program is open to eligible children in Calvert County, including those not currently enrolled in CCPS. Households must contact the CCPS Child Nutrition Office at 443-550-8680 to confirm eligibility and register each child. Families can also submit a meal benefit application through the district’s child nutrition website to determine qualification. Registration is now open, and officials encourage early sign-up to ensure smooth participation.

Community partners across Calvert County are playing a key role in making the distributions possible. The effort brings together multiple county departments, including Community Resources, Economic Development, Public Safety and Communications & Media Relations, along with the Calvert County Family Network, Detention Center, Health Department, Sheriff’s Office, CalvertHealth and Department of Social Services. This collaboration reflects a broader countywide commitment to supporting families and addressing basic needs.

For residents in Southern Maryland, access to reliable summer nutrition programs is particularly important in areas where seasonal work or transportation challenges can affect food security. By offering multiple pickup locations across Calvert County, the program aims to reduce barriers for working families and those with limited mobility.

CCPS officials have emphasized that the meals are designed to be simple and convenient, allowing parents and guardians to focus on other summer activities while knowing their children have consistent access to breakfast and lunch options. The inclusion of milk in each kit adds an important nutritional component for growing children.

Families seeking additional local resources can visit OurCalvert.org, which serves as a central hub for community support services in the county. The site provides information on a range of programs that complement the summer meals effort, from health services to family assistance.

The Grab ‘n Go Summer Meals Program represents one part of Calvert County’s ongoing work to support student well-being year-round. As schools prepare for the next academic year, initiatives like this help maintain continuity in nutrition and help children return to the classroom ready to learn.

Eligible households are encouraged to register soon through the CCPS Child Nutrition Office or website to take advantage of the weekly distributions. With community partners and local schools working together, the program aims to make nutritious meals accessible to as many Calvert County children as possible during the summer break.
