Maryland country artist Luke Borchelt releases his debut album Water Town today through MDDN Records, drawing directly from his upbringing in a waterfront community along the Chesapeake Bay. The 10-track project captures the rhythms of small-town life, family bonds, heartbreak and the lasting impressions left by the people and places that shape a person’s story.
Borchelt, an Anne Arundel County native, crafted the record with a team of songwriters and producers who have worked with major country acts. Collaborators include Andrew Baylis, known for his work with Jelly Roll, along with Jace Logan Jennings and Matt McGinn, who has written for Luke Combs. The result blends traditional country narrative with influences from DMV hip-hop and gospel roots, creating a sound that feels both grounded in regional experience and open to broader musical currents.
The album’s title and themes reflect Borchelt’s connection to the water. In a statement, he described the project as an invitation to understand life in what he calls “crab country,” where residents value directness, loyalty to their own and openness to newcomers. Songs explore everyday scenes from above-ground pools to floated rivers, alongside deeper reflections on family and the marks left by relationships and community.

Borchelt’s path to this release has included steady growth in the Maryland music scene and beyond. He performed the National Anthem at a Baltimore Orioles game at Camden Yards, a moment he has described as a full-circle experience given his local roots. He also took the stage at the Washington Commanders’ NFL Draft Party and collaborated with Be The People. Earlier performances include sharing bills with Shaboozey and appearing at Ocean City’s Country Calling festival, events that helped build his profile while keeping him tied to Maryland audiences.
Water Town arrives as Borchelt expands his reach. On July 1 he headlines Seacrets in Ocean City, a venue he has called one of his favorites. That appearance serves as a home-state sendoff before he launches “The Water Town Tour” on August 1 in Waco, Texas. The 17-date run will take him across the United States and into Canada, with tickets already on sale through his website.

The album’s tracklist reflects its mix of personal storytelling and regional flavor. Songs such as “Water Town,” “Ocean City,” “Fishnets” and “Swimming” evoke specific images of life along the Bay and in Maryland coastal areas. Other tracks like “Red Sky,” “Stay Warm” and “NASCAR” suggest a broader range of influences and emotional territory, from introspection to high-energy moments.
For listeners in Southern Maryland, where the Chesapeake Bay shapes daily life and local identity, Borchelt’s work offers a familiar lens. Communities across Calvert, Charles and St. Mary’s counties share many of the same waterfront traditions and tight-knit dynamics he describes. His music highlights how those experiences translate into country songwriting without requiring a Nashville address.
Borchelt taught himself guitar at age 23 after a musically diverse upbringing that included gospel choir singing and exposure to DMV hip-hop. That background informs the album’s willingness to blend storytelling traditions with rhythmic and cultural elements from the region he calls home. The result is a debut that positions him as an artist comfortable drawing from multiple sources while remaining rooted in Maryland soil.
The release follows a period of increasing visibility for Borchelt. His earlier project Every Rain came out via Droptine Recordings and Grey Area Records with Sony Music Publishing. Water Town builds on that foundation, expanding the sonic palette while staying focused on the people and places that continue to influence his writing.
As Borchelt heads into a national tour, the album serves as both a personal statement and an introduction for new listeners. For Maryland audiences who have followed his local performances, it offers a recorded document of the stories and sounds that have defined his early career. The upcoming Ocean City headline show and subsequent dates will give fans a chance to hear the material live in settings that echo the album’s spirit.
Water Town stands as a snapshot of one Maryland artist’s effort to translate lived experience into song. Its emphasis on hometown memory, family and the pull of place resonates in a state where the Chesapeake Bay remains central to identity for many residents. With the tour ahead and continued local support, Borchelt’s debut marks a clear step forward in a career still unfolding.
