DAHLGREN, Va. — The Naval Support Facility Dahlgren has released its range operations schedule for the remainder of the week, with testing activities expected to generate loud to very loud noise in portions of the station and surrounding communities. River restrictions on the Potomac will also be in place for several days.
On Tuesday, July 7, operations run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. with potential loud noise in the southern and eastern areas, including the Main Range and Terminal Range. Similar loud noise is anticipated down range and in nearby communities. The Potomac River will be restricted approximately 15,000 yards down range below the yellow “M” buoy (Maryland side) to the yellow “L” buoy (Virginia side).
Wednesday, July 8, features the same operating hours but with potential for very loud noise on station and down range. River restrictions remain in effect at the same locations.

Thursday, July 9, returns to loud noise levels during the standard 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. window, with identical river restrictions.
On Friday, July 10, operations are scheduled from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. with no anticipated noise on station or down range. River restrictions will be slightly reduced, covering approximately 10,000 yards down range below the yellow “O” buoy (Maryland) to the yellow “N” buoy (Virginia).
These activities are part of routine testing and training at the Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division, a key facility supporting naval research, development, and testing. The site plays a critical role in advancing technologies for the U.S. Navy and Department of Defense, contributing significantly to the local economy in King George County and broader Southern Maryland.
Residents and boaters in the area are advised to plan accordingly. Loud noise may be audible in communities surrounding NSF Dahlgren during active periods. River restrictions are enforced for safety, and mariners should avoid the designated zones. Updates are typically provided through local channels and the base’s public affairs office.
The schedule is subject to change based on operational needs, weather, or other factors. For the most current information, contact appropriate authorities or monitor official notifications.
NSF Dahlgren’s operations are vital to national defense while balancing community impacts through advance notice. Local officials and the Navy maintain ongoing coordination to minimize disruptions in this historic and strategically important region.
