MILLINGTON, Tenn. — Chief Petty Officer Luke Mauck, a native of La Plata, Maryland, recently participated in Fourth of July celebrations in Bristol, Rhode Island, while serving aboard the USS Wichita.
The skills and values learned in La Plata have proven foundational to Mauck’s success in the Navy. “What I learned from my hometown was humility,” Mauck said. “Everyone that joins the Navy has come from somewhere else, at a different time in their life and for a different reason to change something different than what I would change.”
Mauck graduated from La Plata High School in 2007 and joined the Navy 18 years ago seeking greater opportunities. “I joined the Navy because I wanted to do more for myself and my future than stay in my hometown,” he said.
Today, Mauck serves as an electronics technician aboard the Freedom-variant littoral combat ship USS Wichita, assigned to Littoral Combat Ship Squadron 2 and homeported in Mayport, Florida. These agile warships are designed for operations in near-shore environments to counter modern threats and can integrate with larger naval forces.
“The thing I love most about my job is the challenge it brings,” Mauck said. “It gives me a deep sense of purpose and validation. The work is both physically and mentally demanding, and that’s exactly what I need to feel like I’ve accomplished something meaningful for others. Above all, I take great pride in teaching young sailors and officers how to navigate life by sharing my experiences and the lessons I’ve learned through my Navy journey.”
Mauck’s proudest accomplishments include completing his first deployment aboard USS Halyburton in 2009 and advancing through the ranks to chief petty officer. “This validated all of the hard work I invested and continue to invest into the Navy,” he said.
His goal remains focused on mentorship. “My goal in the Navy is to give to others what wasn’t given to me,” Mauck explained. “I didn’t have a lot of great mentoring for a while. It was actually years of trial and error. Fortunately, that taught me how to handle a lot of different adversities, especially ones that have helped me coach sailors to become leaders and leaders to become chiefs.”
As the United States celebrates 250 years of independence, the Navy highlights its more than 250 years of defending freedom and prosperity. With 90% of global commerce traveling by sea and critical infrastructure relying on maritime security, recruiting and retaining talent from communities like La Plata remains essential.
Mauck serves in a Navy that operates far forward around the world and around the clock. His story exemplifies how values from Southern Maryland continue to strengthen naval service.
